  • On domesticated hybrids and misplaced dialogues: Troubles with positivist legacies

Rosana De Freitas Boullosa, Boullosa Rosana•ARTICLE•Critical Policy Studies•2026•References: 1

This essay critically examines recent attempts to build methodological and epistemological ‘bridges’ between positivism and interpretivism in policy research. While often presented as gestures of dialogue or pluralism, such efforts frequently conceal power asymmetries that privilege positivist logics. The result is what I term domesticated hybrids – works that adopt the language of interpretivism while neutralizing its critical and political forc…

  • The democratic transformation of public policy through community activism in Brazil

Rosana De Freitas Boullosa, Janaína Lopes Pereira Peres•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 7

This article explores transformational change in public policy through community-based governance and the collective design of experience-oriented policy and action. Using a critical-interpretive theoretical perspective, we derived three key lessons in achieving this change from the experience of Paraisópolis, a Brazilian favela made famous for its COVID-19 successful response plan, despite historical state abandonment and overlapping vulnerabili…

  • Lasswell and the mirror of time: Considering some of the questions raised by Torgerson

    Rosana De Freitas Boullosa•ARTICLE•Critical Policy Studies•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The mirror proposed by Douglas Torgerson provides a very strong reflexivity dimension: what can we learn, as part of critical policy studies, while seeing ourselves in the reflection in the mirror, and at the same time separate and contrasted with that image? Among the questions suggested by that metaphor of the mirror, two of them seem particularly significant to me: 1) What is our political agenda? 2) What is our approach to democracy? Consider…
