Improvements in Somatic Complaints Among Individuals With Serious Mental Illness Receiving Treatment in a Psychiatric Hospital
OBJECTIVE: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) experience significant comorbid somatic complaints. Little is known about response to integrated inpatient care that addresses psychiatric and general medical needs among individuals with SMI. METHODS: Latent growth curve analyses were used to model somatic symptom trajectories across adult inpatients with SMI (n = 989). The Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15) was administered at admis…
Solving Mental Healthcare Access Problems in the Twenty‐first Century
Technology is the key to solving mental healthcare access problems in the twenty‐first century. Perhaps the greatest challenge we face in harnessing the possibilities of information technology in healthcare today is to ensure that we do it in a manner that is clearly evidence‐based. This means innovations must be evaluated in a variety of contexts, using designs to ensure they are feasible and acceptable to our patients, are effective in treating…

Interpersonal violence and mental health outcomes among Asian American and Native Hawaiian/other Pacific Islander college students
In a cross-sectional survey of college students (N = 614) we studied interpersonal violence victimization, perpetration, and mental health outcomes in an ethnoracially diverse rural-based sample of Asian Americans (27%), and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders (25%), two groups vastly underrepresented in trauma research. High rates of interpersonal violence (34%), violence perpetration (13%), and probable psychiatric diagnoses (77%), includin…
Racial Disparities In Trauma Exposure, Psychiatric Symptoms, and Service Use Among Female Patients In Veterans Affairs Primary Care Clinics
Frueh Et Al. Respond
Rosen and Spitzer raise important issues that go beyond the scope of our initial commentary.1 As they and others have noted, there are important conceptual problems with the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) construct as currently represented in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition,2–7 particularly the way traumatic events (criterion A1), peritraumatic emotions (criterion A2), traumatic event memories, and symp…

Trauma Among Female Veterans
This article reviews the literature documenting the nature and prevalence of traumatic experiences, trauma-related mental and physical health problems, and service use among female veterans. Existing research indicates that female veterans experience higher rates of trauma exposure in comparison to the general population. Emerging data also suggest that female veterans may be as likely to be exposed to combat as male veterans, although not as dir…
US Department of Veterans Affairs Disability Policies for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
An accumulating body of empirical data suggests that current Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) psychiatric disability and rehabilitation policies for combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are problematic. In combination, recent administrative trends and data from epidemiological and clinical studies suggest theses policies are countertherapeutic and hinder research efforts to advance our knowledge regarding PTSD. Current VA disabi…

Chronicity of Symptoms in Combat Veterans with PTSD Treated by the VA Mental Health System
Self-report questionnaire data, collected at two stages of treatment, are presented for a group of 40 combat veterans with PTSD treated within the VA mental health system. Patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory, Mississippi Scale, and Dissociative Experiences Scale prior to treatment at a PTSD outpatient clinic and at midtreatment follow-up. Patients' symptom reports at follow-up were not correlated with length of time in treatment. Fur…
