Right-peripheral subjects in German and Persian across registers
The right clause edge links the utterance to the larger discourse and supports interlocutors in navigating the communicative situation, making such linguistic alternatives prime candidates to be exploited for register distinction. We investigate whether right-peripheral subjects behave similar with respect to registers in the verb-final languages German and Persian, using the multi-lingual Lang*Reg corpus (Adli, Aria, Elisabeth Verhoeven, Nico Le…
Globalising the study of language variation and change
Sociolinguistic study of variation and change has a long‐standing bias towards speech communities in Western and especially Anglophone societies. We argue that our field requires a much wider scope for variation studies, which puts more emphasis on culturally contextualised social meaning in the full range of human societies. The pursuit of understanding, generalizations, and even universals in the study of the social life of human language deman…

Syntactic variation in French Wh-questions
This paper deals with the issue of social variation at the level of syntax, investigating wh-movement and subject-verb-inversion (stylistic inversion) in wh-constructions in European French. It proposes an analysis of the subjective side of social structure, in terms of the sociocultural theory of Bourdieu and the lifestyle concept. Furthermore, this work shows that acceptability judgments do represent a valid and insight-providing source of evid…
A heuristic mathematical approach for modeling constraint cumulativity
This work presents a heuristic mathematical approach to modeling and quantifying constraint violations. The empirical phenomenon consists of different word orders with contrastive focus in the Spanish variety of Catalonia and in Catalan. Experimental data has been collected with a gradient acceptability judgment test for auditorily presented focus constructions
Constraint cumulativity and gradience
French wh -in-situ Questions and Syntactic Optionality
The aim of this paper is to corroborate the assumption of syntactic optionality for French wh-questions. In terms of a broader basis of evidence three different data types are utilized: Firstly, a qualitative interview approach suggests that wh-in-situ does not show the syntactic restrictions postulated by Bošković (1998) and Cheng & Rooryck (2000), weakening the evidence in favor of the assumption of LF-movement. Secondly, a graded grammaticalit…
