  • Studies of laughter in interaction

Phillip J Glenn, Phillip Glenn et al.•BOOK•Studies of laughter in interaction•2013

Laughter is pervasive in interaction yet often overlooked in the research. This volume presents a collection of original studies revealing the highly-ordered and complex range of ways tha laughs appear in and contribute to social interactions. Building on 40 years of conversation analytic research, the authors of these studies show how the design and placement of laughs contribute to unfolding sequences, social activities, identities, and relatio…

  • Laughter in Interaction

    Open Access•Phillip Glenn•BOOK•Laughter in Interaction•2003

Laughter in Interaction is an illuminating and lively account of how and why people laugh during conversation. Bringing together twenty-five years of research on the sequential organisation of laughter in everyday talk, Glenn analyses recordings and transcripts to show the finely detailed co-ordination of human laughter. He demonstrates that its production and placement, relative to talk and other activities, reveal much about its emergent meanin…

  • Theory presentation and assessment in a problem‐based learning group

    Phillip J Glenn, Phillip Glenn et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 8

In this study, we apply the procedures and assumptions of ethnomethodological conversation analysis to analyze a segment of interaction in a problem‐based learning (PBL) meeting. In the segment, one member of the group presents a theory pertaining to the case under study. Before it is accepted or rejected, the same speaker presents a second theory to which other group members react with objections and disaffiliative laughter. The presenter conseq…

Open Access•Timothy Koschmann, Phillip Glenn et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education Online•1997

Though much has been published concerning the intended or realized benefits of participating in a Problem-Based curriculum, we know little about what participants (faculty and students) actually do when they say they are doing Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The current paper is part of an ongoing to effort to apply methods borrowed from studies of discourse to understanding PBL as a form of enacted practice. In particular, the paper provides a des…

  • Conceptualizing Conversational Complexity

    Open Access•John A Daly, Robert A Bell et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1985•Cited by: 8•References: 27

A successful conversation requires participants to have knowledge of both the topic under discussion and the nature of conversation. This study asks whether people who are more sophisticated in their representation of conversation behave differently than their less sophisticated counterparts. This issue was probed by devising two operationalizations of what we call Conversational complexity. The two measures assessed peoples' constructs about con…
