  • Perception of violin performance expression through expressive musical terms

Open Access•Aviel Sulem, Ehud Bodner et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2023

Expressive musical terms (EMTs) are often used in classical Western music as verbal instructions to performers to convey particular forms of expression. Recently, Sulem et al. (2019) analyzed the perception of EMTs by professional string players without reference to heard musical performances, defining four representative categories of EMTs located in the four quadrants of the two-dimensional model of affect whose parameters are valence and arous…

  • Word stress at utterance-final position: An acoustic study on Hebrew read sentences

    Vered Silber-Varod, Noam Amir•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2022

This study investigates the realization of the two most common word-level stress patterns in Hebrew, final and penultimate, at utterance-final position. Twenty-six disyllabic words that form minimal pairs, which differ only in their stress pattern, were embedded in 52 sentences. The mean values of three acoustic parameters—duration, F0, and intensity—were measured for vowels of the target words. Findings show that duration is significantly longer…

  • The acoustics of primary and secondary stress in Modern Hebrew

    Evan-Gary Cohen, Vered Silber-Varod et al.•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2018

This study investigates the acoustic realization of primary and secondary stress in polysyllabic words in Modern Hebrew (MH). The study focuses on the production of target words embedded in a meaningful carrier sentence, with three primary stress types: ultimate, penultimate and antepenultimate stress. We measured the duration, intensity and F 0 of each vowel. Results show that duration is the sole reliable cue for stress in MH, and that there is…

  • Symbaline: An electromagnetically actuated wine glass instrument

Lior Arbel, Yoav Y Schechner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2018

The Symbaline is a wine glass instrument, producing sounds by exciting a set of wine glasses using electromagnets. The electromagnets are driven by audio signals generated using any musical instrument, allowing musicians to play the Symbaline using their own instruments without additional training. Symbaline sound customisation is achieved by applying various audio effects on the input signal, as well as assembling different sets of ready-made wi…
