  • From demonstratives to articles in the Celtic languages

Open Access•Eugenio Ramón Luján Martínez, Esteban Ngomo Fernández•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Linguistics•2025

Medieval Insular Celtic languages possess definite articles, unlike their ancient Continental counterparts, which lack them. Since the 19th century, scholars have hypothesized that these articles in Insular Celtic languages evolved from earlier demonstratives. This grammaticalization process likely followed the path from demonstrative to definite article. However, systematic surveys of ancient Celtic data to understand this process have been lack…

The Southwestern inscriptions from the Iberian Peninsula (frequently referred to as "Tartessian") are a set of about 100 inscriptions dating back to the Iron Age. Probably most of them are funerary steles, which were written in a language that has not yet been identified. This paper provides a state-of-the-art of our current knowledge about these inscriptions and their language and offers prospectives and insights into the possibilities of the re…

  • Reconstructing Syntax

    Open Access•Jóhanna Barðdal, Spike Gildea et al.•BOOK•Reconstructing Syntax•2020•Citada por: 4•Referências: 20

During several decades, syntactic reconstruction has been more or less regarded as a bootless and an unsuccessful venture, not least due to the heavy criticism in the 1970s from scholars like Watkins, Jeffers, Lightfoot, etc. This fallacious view culminated in Lightfoot's (2002: 625) conclusion: "[i]f somebody thinks that they can reconstruct grammars more successfully and in more widespread fashion, let them tell us their methods and show us the…

A Celtiberian inscribed dagger from Almaraz (Cáceres, Espagne). This is the first edition of a Celtiberian dagger that must probably come from Almaraz, in the Spanish province of Cáceres. Typologically, it can be classified into one of the most characteristic variants of the bi-discoidal model, the edge-hilt one. A certain number of daggers of this type are known to date and most of them go back to the end of the 2nd century or the 1st century BC…

  • Semantic maps and word formation

    Open Access•Eugenio Ramón Luján Martínez, Eugenio R Luján•ARTICLE•Linguistic Discovery•2010

The semantic map methodology has been applied mainly to the analysis of the multifunctionality of grammatical morphemes-they allow one to deal with this problem without having to decide between monosemic and polysemic analyses. Similar issues arise when dealing with derivational morphemes and word formation patterns so that this methodology can be extended to their analysis. As a case study, causal semantic roles are surveyed in this paper, both …

    Open Access•Eugenio Ramón Luján Martínez•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2008•Referências: 1

Procopius' Gothic War is generally assumed to be the oldest source for the study of pagan Slavic religion. However, only the ethnographic excursus on the Slavs and Antes (Procop. Goth. III 14.22-30) is mentioned in works dealing with that subject, while no attention has been paid to another very interesting passage of the same work (Procop.Goth. III 38.17–23). In that passage Procopius describes the three ways in which the Slavs used to kill thei…
