  • The role of bodies of water in settlement names referring to the natural environment

    Open Access•Éva Kovács•ARTICLE•Onomastica•2024

In this essay I examine the relationship of settlement names with bodies of water and places associated with water. I point out the role of water and hydronyms in the formation of the settlement name type and the form in which they are present in early Old Hungarian settlement names. The vast majority of the settlement names have only a single constituent: metonymy, name-giving without a formant occurs in 85% of the names (e.g. Ér settlement name…

Among the basic name structural types of settlement names referring to the natural environment, more than half of the name corpus is made up by single-co…

  • Black Bodies, White Bodies – ‘Gypsy’ Images in Central Europe at the Turn of the Twentieth Century (1880–1920)

    Open Access•Éva Kovács•ARTICLE•Critical Romani Studies•2021

The problem of the observer has long been a key concern of social theories. However, in mainstream sociology, it was not until three decades ago that the relationship between image and text, seeing and gaze, appeared on the horizon of the discipline. Studying the visual representation of Roma in Modernity, one sees how CentralEuropean societies create their own sexualised and feminised Blackness through ‘savage’ groups and individuals. The centra…

  • The effect of smileys as motivational incentives on children’s fruit and vegetable choice, consumption and waste: A field experiment in schools in five European countries

To assess whether smiley stamps work as a motivational incentive to promote fruit and vegetable eating among children, we conducted a field experiment in ten primary schools in five European countries using one control and one treatment school per country. The six-week experiment was split into three two-week phases before, during and after the smiley was implemented. During the smiley phase, the children received a smiley stamp for choosing a po…

  • Limits of Universalization: The European Memory Sites of Genocide

    Éva Kovács•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2018•Cited by: 1

The twentieth century became known as the era of genocides. However, historians do not yet agree on the use of the category of genocide for all mass killings in the twentieth century and still are debating their place in European civilization. My article focuses on the European lieux de mémoire of the genocides within the associative framework of the fundamental question about the material evidence of crime. This framework helps highlight the lim…

  • Winners and losers as mangrove, coral and seagrass ecosystems respond to sea-level rise in Solomon Islands

Open Access•Simon Albert, Megan I Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

A 2007 earthquake in the western Solomon Islands resulted in a localised subsidence event in which sea level (relative to the previous coastal settings) rose approximately 30–70 cm, providing insight into impacts of future rapid changes to sea level on coastal ecosystems. Here, we show that increasing sea level by 30–70 cm can have contrasting impacts on mangrove, seagrass and coral reef ecosystems. Coral reef habitats were the clear winners with…

  • Overcoming History through Trauma. The Hungarian Historikerstreit

    Open Access•Éva Kovács•ARTICLE•European Review•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 1

In the mid-summer of 2012, a sort of Historikerstreit broke out in Hungary. The main topics of the controversy were the language of and the attitude to the history of the Holocaust. In what follows I will argue that the Hungarian Historikerstreit is closely related to both the renaissance of the Horthy era (1920–1944) in current Hungarian politics and the ambivalent attitude towards the Holocaust in public memory. Since 2010, Hungary has celebrat…

The Shoah destroyed the substance of Austrian Jewishness. The emigration of the survivors after 1945 and the indignation of the Austrian society resulted in the dislocation of the memory of the Shoah itself. The Shoah provoked a massive social amnesia during the first two to three decades after World War II in Europe. The long silence was broken by the American television series Shoah in 1979 and by the Waldheim affair in 1986. Since the second h…
