Perspectives in Interactional Psychology
Personality Psychology: Current Status and Prospects For the Future
Personality Psychology: Current Status and Prospects For the Future I want to consider the current status and future of the field of personality psychology, often basing my observations on my own research and theoretical interests. Let me begin by summarizing what I have to say in terms of three points of emphasis: First, the field of personality can be viewed in terms of three disciplines—trait, social cognitive, and psychodynamic—each associate…
Personality: A View of the Future Based on a Look at the Past
A Critical Analysis of Current Trait Theory
Many current trait theorists suggest that a consensus is emerging around the Big Five as the basic structure of personality. This target article gives critical consideration to the nature of the evidence supporting such a view as well as to more fundamental issues concerning the conceptual status of the trait concept. It is argued that the evidence is less supportive and convincing than is suggested by trait enthusiasts, that there are fundamenta…
The Rational Mind and the Problem of Volition
The content of personality inventory items
Four aspects of the item content of personality inventories were studied: the area of psychological functioning addressed (cognitive, preferences, feelings, behavioral), degree of reference to situational factors, degree of reference to response frequency, and the nature of reference to time. Three judges rated items of the California Psychological Inventory, Eysenck Personality Inventory, Maudsley Personality Inventory, Minnesota Multiphasic Per…

A free-response description approach to the analysis of person-situation interaction
This study is a report on the utilization of a free-response description approach to address the following question: In what ways does an individual remain stable and vary as a function of situational characteristics, and what are those characteristics? Each of four subjects generated a list of situations in his or her current life which he or she then rated on lists of situation traits, feelings, and behaviors, which were also generated by the i…
Academic Performance as a Function of Task Requirements and Cognitive Style
In a study of the relation between cognitive style and academic performance in 4 departments (Engineering, Natural Science, Social Science, Humanities) 150 Princeton upperclassmen completed the Schroder Paragraph Completion Test which was used to measure cognitive style. Scores on the PCT, together with scores on verbal and mathematical aptitude tests, were related to performance in each of the four departments. A relationship was found between t…
Performance and satisfaction as a function of individual-environment fit
Research is reviewed which treats performance and satisfaction as a function of the interaction between the characteristics of the individual and those of the interpersonal and noninterpersonal environments. Relevant theoretical positions are reviewed. Alternative models for the analysis of interactions or transactions between individuals and environments are discussed. The conclusion points to and discusses 3 questions: Should one consider the p…
Satisfaction and perceived self-environment similarity: A semantic differential study of student-college interaction1
Social Desirability and Self-Ideal Self Ratings on the Semantic Differential
Aptitude, Anxiety and Academic Performance: A Moderator Variable Analysis
To study the moderating effects of anxiety on the relationship between aptitude and performance, and the moderating effects of aptitude on the relationship between anxiety and performance the Alpert-Haber Achievement Anxiety Test was administered to freshman students, and scores on this test were correlated with measures of aptitude and academic performance. Significant values on the order of .20 were found between the anxiety scales and aptitude…

Predictive Strategies and the Need to Confirm Them: Some Notes on Pathological Types of Decisions
The point of view presented in this paper is that some forms of psychopathological behavior can be understood in terms of the ways in which people anticipate their environment and the behavioral decisions they make in relation to such anticipations. Through effective predictive strategies the individual may take advantage of rewards in the environment, prepare for unpleasantness, and keep conflict at a minimum. A need to confirm predictive strate…
