Reprints and Revivals of Renaissance Drama
Studies of early modern English drama in print and performance have often prioritized – or even fetishized – first editions and first performances. Challenging ingrained assumptions about chronology, this collection focuses critical attention on the various ways that Renaissance drama was repeated and renewed. Ranging widely across the period, from the 1580s to the early 1700s, the chapters examine canonical plays and authors-including Shakespear…

Working playwrights, 1580–1642
If a complete list of playwrights for the commercial stage from 1580 to 1642 were to be discovered in a London archive, few students of early English drama would recognise many of the names. Until the mid 1580s, most commercial drama was written by players for their companies; while there are some lists of players in this period, there are no lists of those players who were also dramatists. After 1585 players continued to supply companies with pl…

Play Identifications
In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Frederick G. Fleay raised to high art the game of play identification. Choosing pairs in which one text survived and the other had a stage history in Henslowe's Diary, Fleay argued by a similarity of titles and subject matter that two plays were essentially the same text. Thus he identified The Wise Man of West Chester (Wise Man) with Munday's a Kent and a Cumber (John a Kent) and Longshanks with Geo…
