Co-defining research priorities to address knowledge gaps for future management: A participatory framework for species prioritisation in small-scale coral reef fisheries
Operationalizing enabling conditions: A social-ecological perspective on marine conservation success
Area-based conservation is a popular strategy to address biodiversity decline. However, despite the identification of enabling conditions, many initiatives still fail at delivering positive outcomes for nature and people. This study examines how enabling conditions are operationalized and their influence on conservation effectiveness using social-ecological approaches. Guided by the central question of whether the way enabling conditions are put …
Moorea lagoon fishers' mental maps: An exploratory analysis of Polynesian spatial knowledge
This empirical study builds upon prior research concerning cultural influences on spatial mental representations in Oceania. A comprehensive examination of 93 mental maps sourced from 59 lagoon fishers of Moorea (French Polynesia) reveals interesting facts about the way they organize and share their spatial knowledge. Firstly, consistent with previous studies across Oceania, Polynesian fishers exhibit a preference for the allocentric perspective …
Local perceptions of socio-ecological drivers and effects of coastal armoring: The case of Moorea, French Polynesia
Crafting the success and failure of decentralized marine management
This paper presents an ethnographic case study of the design and revision of a decentralized marine management scheme implemented on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia named Plan de Gestion de l’Espace Maritime (PGEM). Drawing on an analysis of over 50 consultative workshops and meetings, held from 2018 to 2021 during the PGEM revision, we document the materials, discourses, and practices local stakeholders (e.g., fishers, cultural and enviro…
Perceptions and responses of Pacific Island fishers to changing coral reefs
Interhousehold variability and its effects on seed circulation networks: A case study from northern Cameroon
Wencélius, J., M. Thomas, P. Barbillon, and E. Garine. 2016. Interhousehold variability and its effects on seed circulation networks: a case study from northern Cameroon. Ecology and Society 21(1):44.http://dx.doi.org/10.5751/ES-08208-210144
Farmer seed networks make a limited contribution to agriculture? Four common misconceptions
