  • The futures of ethnic groups in the Russian Federation

Marek Kupiszewski, Dorota Kupiszewska et al.•ARTICLE•Eurasian Geography and Economics•2017•Cited by: 3

The changes, sometimes dramatic, in the size and structure of the ethnic groups of the Russian Federation (RF) raise questions about their possible futures. The paper presents simulations of how ethnic groups of the RF could develop in the future and discusses the demographic aspects of the predicted changes. The simulations cover a 25-year period, from 1 January 2011 to 1 January 2036 and were prepared for the 22 most numerous ethnic groups usin…

  • The Impact of Internal Migration on Population Redistribution

Open Access•Philip Rees, Martin Bell et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2016•Cited by: 48•References: 10

We know that internal migration shapes human settlement patterns, but few attempts have been made to measure systematically the extent of population redistribution or make comparisons between countries. Robust comparisons are hampered by limited data access, different space‐time frameworks, and inadequate summary statistics. We use new analysis software (IMAGE Studio) to assess the effects of differences in the number and configuration of geograp…

  • Internal migration around the world

Open Access•John Stillwell, Martin Bell et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 28

This paper examines how internal migration distance and its frictional effect vary between countries. Such comparisons are hampered by differences in the number and configuration of spatial units for which data are available − the modifiable area unit problem (MAUP). We use the flexible aggregation routines embedded in the IMAGE Studio, a bespoke software platform which incorporates a spatial interaction model, to elucidate these scale and patter…

  • Internal Migration and Development

    Open Access•Martin Bell, Elin Charles-Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2015•Cited by: 49•References: 32

Migration is the principal demographic process shaping patterns of human settlement, and it serves an essential role in human development. While progress has been made in measuring international migration, internal migration statistics are as yet poorly developed in many countries. This article draws on a repository of data established under the IMAGE (Internal Migration Around the GlobE) project to address this deficit by constructing the first …

  • Internal Migration Data Around the World

    Open Access•Martin Bell, Elin Charles-Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2014•Cited by: 47•References: 6

Compared with other demographic processes, little attention has been given to the way levels and patterns of internal migration vary around the world. This can be traced in part to the absence of any central repository of internal migration data, but it also reflects widespread variation in the ways migration is measured. If robust, reliable comparisons between countries are to be made, a clear understanding of the available data is an essential …

  • Population and labour force projections for 27 European countries, 2002-052

Open Access•Jakub Bijak, Dorota Kupiszewska et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Population /…•2007•Cited by: 17•References: 13

Population and labour force projections are made for 27 selected European countries for 2002-052, focussing on the impact of international migration on population and labour force dynamics. Starting from single scenarios for fertility, mortality and economic activity, three sets of assumptions are explored regarding migration flows, taking into account probable policy developments in Europe following the enlargement of the EU. In addition to age …
