  • The Tigray People's Liberation Front and its policy towards the Amhara

Girma Tayachew, Marshet Girmay et al.•ARTICLE•African Identities•2025•References: 12

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) played a dominant role in Ethiopian politics from 1976 to 2018. Despite the TPLF’s significant role in shaping Ethiopia’s modern history, its brutal atrocities against the Amhara people remain insufficiently examined in academic discourse. This study delves into the TPLF’s historical crimes against the Amhara, tracing their origins to the adoption of its anti-Amhara manifesto in 1976. It investigates th…

    Fantahun Ayele•ARTICLE•Northeast African Studies•2023•Cited by: 1

Using hitherto unexploited archival documents kept in Gondar, this study attempts to investigate a history of the Ethiopian People Revolutionary Army (EPRA) and its insurgency in eastern Gondar and the counterinsurgency campaigns of the military regime to wipe out the guerrillas. To substantiate the archival documents, attempts have been made to extract oral information through interviews from peasants in eastern Gondar who were involved in EPRA'…

It is now 460 years since the arrival of the first Jesuits who came to implant Catholicism in Ethiopia. In order to promote their evangelical activities, these Catholic missionaries managed to open the first mission schools in the country. The Jesuits are, therefore, regarded as pioneers of missionary education in Ethiopia. Their missionary work was not, however, successful for the introduction of Catholicism resulted in much bloodshed. King Fasi…

Open Access•Fantahun Ayele, Ayele Fantahun•ARTICLE•African Journal of History and…•2016

Gafat is now a desolate spot located a few kilometers Northeast of Dabra Tabor, capital of South Gondar. Some one hundred and fifty years ago, it was a busy village. It was there that Emperor Tewodros II (1855 to 1868) set up his foundry to produce modern arms. Gafat did witness the production of many mortars including the largest one named “Sebastopol.” The purpose of this study is to evaluate the modernization policy of Emperor Tewodros. The pa…

  • The Northwestern Command’s Response to Insurgent Assaults on Dabat, Ethiopia

    Fantahun Ayele•ARTICLE•Northeast African Studies•2016

Between 1974 and 1991, the Ethiopian army was one of the largest and most heavily armed ground forces in Africa. In March 1978, it scored a decisive victory over Somalia. However, it failed to beat the northern insurgents despite its superiority in numbers and arms. On their part, the northern insurgents carefully studied the army’s weakest points and mounted surprise attacks on poorly defended positions. One such target that suffered from repeat…
