  • Pathological lesions attributable to vitamin deficiency in skeletal remains from Puy St. Pierre (Briançon, France)

Open Access•N Salis, E Massa Dettoni et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the presence of pathological alterations attributable to vitamin deficiency in osteological remains from the church of St. Pierre in Puy de St. Pierre, Briançon, France. We recorded alterations referable to scurvy, an acquired osteodystrophy due to vitamin C deficiency, which causes both skeletal and vascular lesions in humans. Scurvy presents a different clinical picture in children and adults: in the…

  • Duration of marriages and remarriages in Chiomonte (Turin) in the XVII–XVIII century

Open Access•Marilena Girotti, Gilles Boëtsch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•References: 3

This is a preliminary study of the duration of marriages and remarriages by widowed people in Chiomonte (Turin) from 1670 to 1729, a period that saw long periods of war alternating with brief intervals of peace. We analysed 748 marriage acts and evaluated the age at first marriage, the duration of marriage, the frequency of remarriage by widowed people and the number of widowed people who remarried. The data were analysed in five-year intervals. …

  • Biodemographic and molecular analysis of an isolated Alpine population (Postua)

Open Access•Alan Marin, Alessandro Achilli et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•References: 2

Isolated populations have been the object of several genetic and anthropological studies, since endogamy and inbreeding often lead to the acquisition of a particular gene pool. In this context, we studied the small, ancient population of Postua in the north-western Italian Alps. We used biodemographic and molecular techniques to analyse the population structure in order to evaluate the relationship between geographical and genetic isolation. We e…

  • Genetic characterization of an isolated alpine population using seroprotein markers

Open Access•N Salis, Paul Brousse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005

The aim of the “Dauphiné Project” is to reconstruct, with a wide perspective and multidisciplinary approach, the anthropological history of some mountain populations in both the French and the Italian parts of the Ancient Dauphiné. Within the “Dauphiné Project”, the present study is an analysis of seroproteins conducted on blood samples of subjects living in Vallouise, small mountain community (Briançonnais); they are male and female adults from …

  • New data on the genetic structure of the population of Sicily

    Open Access•M E Ghiani, M Ghiani et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2002

The distribution of 13 genetic markers (AB0, Rh, ACP, ADA, AK, ESD, GLO, PGD, PGMl, SOD, GC, TF, and PI) were studied in a sample from the Alia population of Sicily, Italy. A total of 34 alleles were detected. In comparison with other Sicilian populations, Alia always appeared genetically distinctive, either in terms of overall genetic diversity or for the number of unique alleles present. The results are consistent with previous studies that sho…

  • The impact of migration on the marriage structure in Fontanigorda

    Open Access•E Rabino Massa, R Melleri et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996•Cited by: 1

Until World War II the economic activity of the inhabitants of the commune of Fontanigorda (Genova — Italy) was based on subsistence farming and temporary migration. Migration to France in search of work absorbed the excess active male population: the isonymy study shows that the migrants were recruited from all the families of the commune. After having left for Marseilles or the mine at St. Maime (in the Alps of Upper Provence), these young migr…
