Governmentality and Political Studies
Often overlooked by political scientists, Foucault's later work on ‘governmentality’ has much to offer political analysis. This paper does three things. First, it highlights three different meanings that Foucault and others give to this term. Second, it reviews some of the key debates – such as the nature of liberal governance – surrounding studies of governmentality. Finally, it illustrates the analytical promise of a governmentality perspective…

Open co-ordination as advanced liberal government
This article applies a Foucauldian analytics of government to recent developments in the European Union (EU), focusing particularly on open methods of co-ordination (OMCs) in the EU. It argues that in the perspective of an analytics of government, the open method of co-ordination can fruitfully be understood as ‘advanced liberal government’, a particular conceptualization of government constituted of ‘practices of liberty’. These practices contin…
Our Danish Democracy: Community, People and Democracy in the Danish Debate on the Common Currency
Adopting a post-structuralist perspective and focusing on a segment of public debate prior to the September 2000 referendum in Denmark on the introduction of the common European currency, five different conceptions of democracy are identified, but a hegemonic discourse is seen to prevail across these conceptions. This discourse contains knowledge of democracy as a community of one homogeneous, solidaristic people and of the existence of one homog…
The Provocation of Plaiting Palm Leaves: Habermas, Foucault and Media Presentations of Education in Danish Television
This article demonstrates how an underlying knowledge of education is relied upon and reproduced in a number of television presentations of a specific education scheme in Denmark, the Free Youth Education scheme. Employing post-structuralist analysis of discourse, the media’s critical presentations of the education scheme are shown to draw upon and recreate a conception of education as a non-leisure preparation for work, which should focus on obt…
Pleasing the Voters or Maximising Influence?: The Danish SDP and European Monetary Integration
The Same Old Game: The European Community in the International Political Economy, 1985-91
The article examines the European Community's role in three international negotiating processes aiming at improved free trade: the Uruguay Round of the GATT negotiations, the negotiations with EFTA and the EC's negotiations on association agreements with three Central European states. The liberal-institutionalist perspective on international cooperation is contrasted with the realist perspective, and in accordance with the realist expectations it…
