  • Revealing the impact of psychiatric comorbidities on treatment outcome in early psychosis using counterfactual model explanation

Open Access•Violet van Dee, Seyed Mostafa Kia et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

These results highlight the importance of identifying and including relevant comorbidities in prediction models, providing valuable insights for improving the treatment and prognosis of patients with psychotic disorders. Furthermore, they open avenues for further research into the efficacy of treating these comorbidities to enhance overall patient outcomes

  • Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia

Open Access•Vassily Trubetskoy, Antonio F Pardiñas et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2022

  • Accelerated Global and Local Brain Aging Differentiate Cognitively Impaired From Cognitively Spared Patients With Schizophrenia

Open Access•Shalaila S Haas, Ruiyang Ge et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Accelerated aging in schizophrenia can be detected at the early disease stages and appears more closely associated with cognitive dysfunction rather than clinical symptoms. Future studies replicating our findings in multi-site cohorts with larger numbers of participants are warranted

  • The Association Between Emotion Recognition, Affective Empathy, and Structural Connectivity in Schizophrenia Patients

    Open Access•Martijn Koevoets, Martijn G J C Koevoets et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

In patients with poor emotion recognition, the negative association between anterior thalamic radiation AD and affective empathy was stronger than in patients with normal emotion recognition capacity. Possibly, axonal damage in fronto-thalamic structural connections, as part of a larger frontotemporal network, underlies the association between poor emotion recognition and higher levels of affective empathy in schizophrenia patients

  • Extensions of Multiple-Group Item Response Theory Alignment

Open Access•Maxwell Mansolf, Annabel Vreeker et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2020

Large-scale studies spanning diverse project sites, populations, languages, and measurements are increasingly important to relate psychological to biological variables. National and international consortia already are collecting and executing mega-analyses on aggregated data from individuals, with different measures on each person. In this research, we show that Asparouhov and Muthén's alignment method can be adapted to align data from disparate …

  • Shared vulnerability for connectome alterations across psychiatric and neurological brain disorders

    Open Access•Siemon C De Lange, Lianne H Scholtens et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2019•Referencias: 74

  • Intelligence and Brain Efficiency

    Open Access•Anouk Marsman, René C W Mandl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2017

Intelligence is a measure of general cognitive functioning capturing a wide variety of different cognitive functions. It has been hypothesized that the brain works to minimize the resources allocated toward higher cognitive functioning. Thus, for the intelligent brain, it may be that not simply more is better, but rather, more efficient is better. Energy metabolism supports both inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmission processes. Indeed, in gl…

  • Detecting Neuroimaging Biomarkers for Psychiatric Disorders

    Open Access•Hugo G Schnack, René S Kahn•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2016

In a recent review, it was suggested that much larger cohorts are needed to prove the diagnostic value of neuroimaging biomarkers in psychiatry. While within a sample, an increase of diagnostic accuracy of schizophrenia (SZ) with number of subjects (N) has been shown, the relationship between N and accuracy is completely different between studies. Using data from a recent meta-analysis of machine learning (ML) in imaging SZ, we found that while l…

  • Effects of a culturally sensitive assessment on symptom profiles in native Dutch and Moroccan patients with a first psychosis referral

    Open Access•Tekleh Zandi, Johan M Havenaar et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 37

Previous studies have reported a higher incidence of psychosis in Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands than among native-born residents. However, this disparity was substantially attenuated when cultural differences in symptom presentation were taken into account. To better understand the impact of different diagnostic procedures on incidence rates, we examined the effects of the use of a culturally sensitive diagnostic interview, compared to a…

  • Structural MRI Differences between Patients with and without First Rank Symptoms

    Open Access•Henriëtte D Heering, Godefridus J C Koevoets et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2015

Brain volume differences between patients with and without FRS are, when present, subtle, and not consistent between three independent samples. Brain abnormalities related to FRS may be too subtle to become visible through structural brain imaging

  • Cannabis Use is a Better Indicator of Poor Mental Health in Women Than in Men
