The term routiers or ‘gens de route’ referred to disbanded soldiers who continued to wage war illicitly for their own benefit. They formed the great companies after the peace of Brétigny (1360) and were given the evocative name of écorcheurs following the peace of Arras (1435). The (modern) concept of a mercenary is used to designate ‘professional’ soldiers who lent their service to a political power and fought in their name. Both routiers and me…
Agincourt in context
This special issue contains a selection of nine papers from an international conference commemorating the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt (1415). The contributions place the battle in the broader context of late medieval warfare, highlighting new trends in war studies and engaging with new and old historiographical debates
Joan of Arc as prisonnière de guerre
Contrary to long-standing claims, the French term prisonnier de guerre dates back to long before the early seventeenth century. The corpus of documents at the centre of this article includes some sixty occurrences of the term (in French or Latin) over a period of more than a century, the earliest dating to 1357. In contrast with previous studies on the status of prisoners of war which have tended to rely on a modern conception of the term, this i…
Henry V and the administration of justice
Where did Henry V get his reputation as a ‘paragon of justice’? It is mainly conveyed to us by French chroniclers, and it is therefore necessary to investigate its origins in the French kingdom. This study focuses on Henry’s administration of justice at the surrender of the town and the Market of Meaux. The stout resistance of the besieged was punished harshly. It was a robust response to an obvious breach of the tacit code of honour. The heroic …
Prisoners of War in the Hundred Years War
