  • Patronage and Social Change in Early Netherlandish Painting (ca. 1400–1550)

    Leen Bervoets, Frederik Buylaert•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•2026

This contribution intervenes in debates on the social basis of early Netherlandish painting (ca. 1400–1550). While scholars agree that patronage was an important factor in explaining the growing popularity of painting, it is unclear which specific groups were responsible for artistic investment. Drawing on a corpus of around five hundred panel paintings, this article constitutes a quantitative and qualitative intervention in this debate. Apart fr…

  • Post-1800

Open Access•Leen Bervoets, Jim Van Der Meulen et al.•ARTICLE•Urban History•2025

From the urban focus of the Paris Summer Olympics to the implications of the COP28 Climate Agreements for city resilience and sustainability, from housing crises and increasing wealth inequality to shifting gender dynamics and pivotal democratic elections, 2024 was notable in terms of poignant, global events. These developments influenced numerous academic narratives, further enriching and diversifying the ever-changing and increasingly multifacet…

  • Pre-1500

Open Access•Leen Bervoets, Jim Van Der Meulen et al.•ARTICLE•Urban History•2025

The year 2024 was a year of citizenship. In more than 80 countries around the world, enfranchised individuals went to cast their votes to elect new governments. The outcomes of those elections will be old news by the time this review is published, but they will continue to affect geopolitics for years to come, for better or worse. Our epoch is frequently lambasted as a unique time of political crisis, among other things because of growing anti-democ…

Open Access•Leen Bervoets, Jim Van Der Meulen et al.•ARTICLE•Urban History•2024

number of people who identified themselves by putting their name, signature or, at least, a mark under their petition grew significantly.Together with this quantitative evidence, Burnett develops a compelling qualitative line of reasoning.Intuitively, we would think that people put their names under the petition to support the community, but what if they saw their participation as a rather cheap way to gain social capital by buttressing their own…

  • Pre-1500

Open Access•Leen Bervoets, Jim Van Der Meulen et al.•ARTICLE•Urban History•2024

The subject that continued to preoccupy discussions within the international academic community in 2023 was, sadly, war.Still animated by Vladimir Putin's unrelenting invasion attempts in Ukraine, and galvanized in November by the severely renewed hostilities in Gaza between Hamas and the Israeli government under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, the end-of-year period was dominated by heated debates, protests and occasionally violent clashes…

  • Urban protest in thirteenth-century north-western Europe

Leen Bervoets, Jan Dumolyn•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2021•Cited by: 2

The historiography of urban revolts in north-western Europe is abundant, yet events of thirteenth-century urban protest are mostly neglected. They are usually only mentioned briefly as forerunners of later, better documented events. Sources for thirteenth-century events of urban protest are scarce, but not absent. This article gives an overview from the first industrial action in Brabant, Flanders and northern France between 1220 and 1250, to the…
