Contextual Drivers of HIV Vulnerability and Retention in Care in the Central African Republic
Fresh brass in the delta. Evidence of alloy production in the Merovingian period from Oegstgeest on the Rhine (The Netherlands)
A 17th century bell foundry in the belfry (Unesco’s world Heritage site) of Gembloux (Belgium)
New insights into the Spanish Levantine rock art pigments combining pXRF and stylistic approach
Mobility of Scandinavian commodities in the Middle Ages and modern period
The sampling of several series of whetstones from medieval sites in the northern quarter of France and Belgium has revealed the (omni-)presence of specimens originating from Norway. This origin, assumed by macroscopic observation of the rocks, has been verified by previously unpublished EDS analyses acquired using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The rock is a fine ash-grey to green-grey micaceous quartz schist, rich in flakes of muscovite…
Why is it so difficult to work on geochemical composition? Supervised geochemical composition data processing to study colouring iron oxide-rich rocks in archaeological contexts
Black adzes in the Early Neolithic of Belgium
Early Neolithic (Linear Pottery Culture) adzes originate from settlements and workshops accompany the neolithization of Belgium. They are made from a wide range of extraregional lithic raw materials such as metamorphic green rocks (amphibolite) and black volcanic rocks (“basalt’) beside more local or regional raw material as flints, light-coloured (sedimentary and lightly metamorphic) quartzites, black lydites (Cambrian nodular phtanite of Céroux…
Middle Neolithic fluorites in Northern France and Belgium
Complementarity of LA-ICP-MS and petrography in the analysis of Neolithic pottery from the Scheldt River valley, Belgium
Practices, recipes and supply of a late medieval brass foundry
Tracking the source of lead of medieval glazed pottery of the Meuse valley (Belgium) through lead isotope analyses
Geochemical and mineralogical characterisation of vitrified waste material discovered in large quantities on Roman salt production sites along the southern North Sea coast
A geological collection and methodology for tracing the provenance of Palaeolithic colouring materials
Although prehistoric sites frequently contain numerous fragments and traces of many different kinds of colouring matter, intensive study of this type of archaeological remains began only recently. Such studies, aimed at determining how raw materials formed and changed over time, and how they were transported by the groups of humans who used them, are extremely valuable as they reveal shared strategies, that is, cultural traditions and the spaces …
Reliability of Ams 14 C Dates of Moss Temper Preserved in Neolithic Pottery From the Scheldt River Valley (Belgium)
Direct dates of pottery obtained from food crusts or other organic residues on the vessel surfaces can be affected by a reservoir effect and/or an old wood effect and therefore be unreliable. Hence, there is a need for alternative ways to directly date pottery. Moss is used as temper by several cultural groups of the late 6th to early 4th millennium cal BC in northwestern Europe. After the pottery is fired, charred moss remains are often preserve…
Distribution of advanced HIV disease from three high HIV prevalence settings in Sub-Saharan Africa
In our study, about 1 in 10 PLHIV had advanced HIV with nearly 40% of them unaware of their HIV status. However, a substantial proportion of patients with advanced HIV were established on ART. Our findings suggest the need for a dual focus on alternative testing strategies to identify PLHIV earlier as well as improving ART retention
Archaeometric and archaeological characterization of the fired clay brick production in the Brussels-Capital Region between the XIV and the third quarter of the XVIII centuries (Belgium)
Brick samples from different archaeological sites represent mostly houses in Brussels (Belgium) built between the end of the Middle ages (end of 13th-beginning 14th centuries) and the end of the Modern Period (18th century). The study gives a mineralogical–petrographical–chemical characterization of the brick samples made in the Brussels-Region and sources the raw silty material, the moulding sand and the lime-mortar. Optical microscopy, X-ray po…
Bird bones from Trou de Chaleux and the human exploitation of birds during the late Magdalenian in Belgium
Cross‐channel Connectivity
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate cross‐Channel exchange of calcareous sandstone‐type whetstones derived from the Weald (Sussex, UK) in the Roman period. The presence of this particular type of whetstone at several Roman sites on the Continent – more specifically, in Belgium, France and the Netherlands – is reported for the first time. The morphology, geological provenance, petrographic characteristics and distribution patterns are disc…
Querns and mills during Roman times at the northern frontier of the Roman Empire (Belgium, Northern France, Southern Netherlands, Western Germany)
This paper presents the results of a multi-disciplinary provenance study of querns and millstones during the Roman period (1st-4th century CE) in the northern part of the Roman Empire (provinces of Gallia Belgica and Germania Inferior). Comparative petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical analysis allowed an international team of archaeologists and geologists to identify the different raw materials used for the manufacturing of querns and mi…
Roman whetstone production in northern Gaul (Belgium and northern France)
This paper focuses on the latest research on the production of Roman whetstones in northern Gaul. To date, little has been written about this specialised industry. However, three workshops producing whetstones were discovered recently in the north of Gaul in Buizingen (Province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium), Nereth (Province of Liège, Belgium) and Le Châtelet-sur-Sormonne (Department of Ardennes, France). Production debris and rough-outs recovered…
Geochemical Sourcing of Flint Artifacts from Western Belgium and the German Rhineland
Identifying the geological and geographical origin of lithic raw materials is critical to effectively address prehistoric forager raw material economies and mobility strategies. Currently, Paleolithic archaeology in Belgium lacks a systematic sourcing strategy to effectively substantiate detailed interpretations of prehistoric hunter‐gatherer behavioral change across time and space. This pilot study evaluates the potential to “fingerprint” flint …
A new Cambrian black pigment used during the late Middle Palaeolithic discovered at Scladina Cave (Andenne, Belgium)
Bird bones from Trou de Chaleux and the human exploitation of birds during the late Magdalenian in Belgium

Discerning geological and geographical sources of Belgian Upper Paleolithic fluorites by rare earth elements and Sr-isotopic geochemistry
