  • Do What (S)HE Says and You Will Be a Champion

Open Access•Jennifer Ann Mcmahon, Jenny Mcmahon et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2017•References: 3

A series of four poems were generated as a result of McMahon's reimmersion into an elite swimming culture where she purposely revisited emotional and mental pain experienced 15 years earlier. Her reimmersion resulted in the re-engagement of torturous training and bodily regimes that other swimmers were subjected to and subjected themselves to. By presenting four evocative poetic representations, McMahon empowered and expressed her 40-year-old bod…

  • Sporting parents on the pool deck

Jennifer Ann Mcmahon, Dawn Penney•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2015

Three athletes' narratives that centre on their perceptions of how their parents' identities were positioned amidst performance and perfection discourses are the focus of this paper. The aim of this research was to critically explore and categorise the three athletes' narrative about their parents in relation to performance and perfection discourses in sport. We explore whether parents ‘lived the part of the athlete parent', ‘resisted the part of…

  • Mentoring in coaching

Chris Zehntner, Jennifer Ann Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2014

This paper reports on research that identifies the disciplinary mechanism of surveillance and power at work within pathways for coach education in the Australian swimming culture. Utilising autoethnography and Foucault, one Australian swimming coach’s experiences are explored, particularly his experiences within the mentor–mentee relationship of the Australian swimming coaching culture. It is contended that mentor coaches act as intermediaries of…

  • (Self-) surveillance and (self-) regulation

Jennifer Ann Mcmahon, Dawn Penney•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2013

This paper utilises Foucault's theory of disciplinary power and concepts of surveillance, regulation and technologies of the self. The concepts are used to explore practices that we associate with the notion of swimmers ‘living by fat numbers' during their competitive swimming careers as adolescents and post-career as adult women. Extracts from narrative accounts generated via in-depth interviews are presented and analysed utilising some Foucauld…

  • Art and Ethics in a Material World

Jennifer Ann Mcmahon, Jennifer Mcmahon•BOOK•Art and Ethics in a Material World•2013•Cited by: 2

In this book, Jennifer A. McMahon argues that a reading of Kant's body of work in the light of a pragmatist theory of meaning and language (which arguably is a Kantian legacy) leads one to put community reception ahead of individual reception in the order of aesthetic relations. A core premise of the book is that neopragmatism draws attention to an otherwise overlooked aspect of Kant's "Critique of Aesthetic Judgment," and this is the conception …

  • Aesthetic Autonomy and Praxis

    Jennifer Ann Mcmahon•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2011

Aesthetic autonomy has been given a variety of interpretations, which in many cases involve a number of claims. Key among them are: (i) art eludes conventional conceptual frameworks and their inherent incompatibility with invention and creativity; and (ii) art can communicate aspects of experience too fine‐grained for discursive language. To accommodate such claims one can adopt either a convention‐based account or a natural‐kind account. A natur…

  • The Classical Trinity and Kant's Aesthetic Formalism

    Jennifer Ann Mcmahon, Jenny Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2010•References: 4

I identify two mutually exclusive notions of formalism in Kant's Critique of Aesthetic Judgement: a thin concept of aesthetic formalism and a thick concept of aesthetic formalism. Arguably there is textual support for both concepts in Kant's third critique. I offer interpretations of three key elements in the Critique of Aesthetic Judgement which support a thick formalism. The three key elements are: Harmony of the Faculties, Aesthetic Ideas and …
