The Urbanisation Effects of a Third London Airport
This paper describes an application of a Lowry type model in a comparative study of the urbanisation effects, on an outer metropolitan sub-region, of locating the third London airport on two of the sites proposed by the Roskill Commission. The sites are at Cublington in Buckinghamshire and Thurleigh in Bedfordshire. No detailed attempt is made to explain the formal structure of the model. Attention is focussed instead on a description of the impa…
A land-use model for sub-regional planning
Cripps E. L. and Foot D. H. S. (1969) A land-use model for sub-regional planning, Reg. Studies 3, 243–268. Recent planning legislation in Britain and the pending introduction of a new structure of local government brings about a change in approach to urban planning, which will only become effective with the introduction of a new, largely computer-based, technology as a support for the planning process. The planner needs an adequate understanding …
The Empirical Development of an Elementary Residential Location Model for Use in Sub-Regional Planning
Some empirical results are presented on a development of an elementary residential location model, using concepts from both gravity and intervening opportunity models. Specifically, intervening opportunities are used as measures of costs within a gravity model framework. The model is shown to reproduce the settlement pattern for the study area reasonably well. The paper concludes with a short discussion of the application of the model in a planni…
