  • Conventions, markets and industry evolution

    Open Access•Max-Peter Menzel•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2023•References: 21

Markets are drivers of evolutionary change. They link social norms to the evolution of an industry. The study uses a process tracing approach to identify two mechanisms of this link. The first mechanism describes how different conventions change the construction of markets. The second mechanism describes how the changing principles of evaluation influence the resource construction of firms and thus the life cycle of the industry. The empirical ex…

  • Entrepreneurial ecosystems and clusters

    Open Access•Jack L Harris, Max-Peter Menzel•ARTICLE•Progress in Human Geography•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 17

The entrepreneurial ecosystem concept is now one of the most popular policy tools for regional development following a surge of interest in entrepreneurship-oriented academic circles, yet has experienced little critical engagement within economic geography discourse. We argue that economic geographers should engage with the entrepreneurial ecosystem concept because (1) it describes a shift in spatial socio-economic organisation that has thus far …

  • The Silicon Valley – Singapore connection

    Open Access•Jack L Harris, Max-Peter Menzel•ARTICLE•Geoforum•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 6

The literature on clusters emphasizes the necessity to integrate external knowledge to maintain their viability. This task, however, is aggravated by institutional differences between clusters. The central question for accessing diverse knowledge then is how to mitigate institutional differences between clusters. We propose that “institutional gateways” between clusters circumvent institutional barriers. Institutional gateways provide a configura…

  • Temporary markets

    Open Access•Tina Haisch, Max-Peter Menzel•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 46

We investigate trade fairs as markets. We combine literature on temporary clusters and that on the geography of markets and describe how the particular knowledge ecologies at trade fairs are enhanced by market devices. Our framework distinguishes the following three kinds of market devices: physical arrangements, judgement devices and prosthetic prices. Using this framework, we compare market constructions before, during and after three fairs for…

  • Modularisation and spatial dynamics in the wind turbine industry

    Open Access•Max-Peter Menzel, J Markus Adrian•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Regions…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 12

This study investigates the dynamics that resulted in the concentration of wind turbine manufacturers in Hamburg, Germany. As these locations correlate with the modularisation of global value chains, we focus on the knowledge processes that are necessary to modularise product architecture and organisation. Our approach is case-study based. We show that modularisation required distinct learning processes that disrupted the industry. Manufacturers …

  • Institutional change and network evolution

    Max-Peter Menzel, Mitchell Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Institutional change and network evolution: explorative and exploitative tie formations of co-inventors during the dot-com bubble in the Research Triangle region. Regional Studies. This paper investigates how institutions impact tie formation, arguing that institutions can direct firm strategies towards exploration or towards exploitation. It translates these strategies into tie formations: explorative tie formation produces structural holes as a…

  • Interrelating Dynamic Proximities by Bridging, Reducing and Producing Distances

    Max-Peter Menzel•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2013•Cited by: 8•References: 31

Menzel M.-P. Interrelating dynamic proximities by bridging, reducing and producing distances, Regional Studies. The proximity concept explains the spatiality of relations and innovations with various dimensions of proximity. The paper adapts this framework to the processes of change. It integrates the interrelations between different dynamics into the nomenclature of proximity and distance. Three dynamics are proposed that both interfere with and…

  • Cluster life cycles--dimensions and rationales of cluster evolution

    Max-Peter Menzel, Dirk Fornahl•ARTICLE•Industrial and Corporate Change•2010

We present a model that explains how the very cluster dynamics is both the driver for the movement of a cluster through a life cycle and the reason why this movement differs from the industry life cycle. The model is based on two key processes: the first is that the emergence, growth, decline and renewal of the cluster depend on the technological heterogeneity of firms; the second is that firms have a larger relative absorptive capacity, when the…
