Love Thy Neighbour? Social Attitudes Towards Persons With Disabilities
This paper examines whether exposure to persons with disabilities in the locality influences attitudes towards their social and economic inclusion. Using nationally representative household survey data from Vietnam and an instrumental variable strategy, we find that higher rates of disability in the local district increases perceptions of employers’ willingness to hire people with disabilities but also decreases support for the inclusion of child…

Long-lasting consequences of war on disability
This article investigates the impact of exposure to United States air force bombing during 1965-75 on the disability status of individuals in Vietnam in 2009. Using a combination of national census and US military data and an instrumental variable strategy which exploits the distance to the former North-South border as a quasi-experiment, the article finds a positive and significant impact of bombing exposure on district level disability rates 40…
News-Agency Output, Quality Control and Competition
Monitoring Reuters’ increasing use of the internet from the mid-1990s, the article focuses on in-house quality controls and issues facing news agencies. While set in a historical context, it highlights aspects of the news organisation’s competition with Bloomberg and news/editorial and management comments on financial and general news and their markets
European News-Agency Beginnings: The Role of S. Engländer
There is little archival evidence about the beginnings of what might be termed the leading nineteenth-century European news agencies—Havas in Paris, Reuter in various European news-centres and then London, and Wolff in Berlin; the concept of the news agency, by contrast, has been dated to late sixteenth-century Italy. Why was it that in some two decades between 1832 and 1851, what would become leading news agencies set up shop? How was it that, w…
Estimating the extra cost of living with disability in Vietnam
Disability is shown to be both a cause and a consequence of poverty. However, relatively little research has investigated the economic cost of living with a disability. This study reports the results of a study on the extra cost of living with disability in Vietnam in 2011. The study was carried out in eight cities/provinces in Vietnam, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh cities (two major metropolitan in Vietnam) and six provinces from each of the s…

Models and measurement in disability: An international review
This article reviews the theoretical basis and methods for disability measurement. Different methods arise from different theoretical perspectives. Recent efforts to develop a general international disability measure consistent with the social model of disability aim to produce an internationally comparable measure of disability with which to assess the equalisation of opportunities. Such a measure cannot consistently identify disabled people in …

The Case of Agent Orange
Just as America and its allies have become embroiled in what some have called another Vietnam, questions to do with the injustice of that earlier conflict have begun to resurface in international forums. In January of 2004, some 29 years since the official end of the Vietnam War the first action on behalf of Vietnamese victims of the principal US military herbicide, Agent Orange, was filed in a New York district court. In March the following year…

Compensation for Vietnam's Agent Orange victims
This article seeks to assess the available sources of compensation for Vietnamese victims of the principal US military herbicide, Agent Orange, used during the Vietnam War period, 1961–71. The impetus for the examination of compensation for the victims of Agent Orange is the apparent inability of international law to accommodate individual victims of war crimes. The struggle identified in this instance is the privileging of peace agreements betwe…
Healing the Wounds of War? A Discussion of Agent Orange Compensation Programmes in the United States and Vietnam
This paper assesses compensation programmes for victims of the principal U.S. Military herbicide, Agent Orange, used during the Vietnam War period 1961 to 1971. Whilst positive steps forward in the formal recognition and compensation of victims, both the Vietnamese and to a lesser extent, the American programme, are found to fall short in meeting the following principles of compensation. That is, in the form of monetary and non-monetary benefits …
Russia, Britain and the blockade – Peter Struve and the restriction of enemy supplies committee
The history of the Russian Restriction of Enemy Supplies Committee has always remained obscure. The committee, which was formed in 1915 to oversee the Russian blockade of Germany, was chaired by Professor Peter Struve, the leading liberal thinker and economist, and his appointment was the sole success of the liberal campaign for the inclusion in government of those who could be said to represent the country at large. On the basis of archival mate…
A strategic approach to the conservation of plants in the United Kingdom»
For commercial lactic acid production, a considerable amount of time (phase II) is required for the depletion of residual sugar to an acceptable range after glucose exhaustion. In this study, the effects of pH, glucoamylase, pullulanase and invertase addition on the degradation of residual sugar were investigated. When pH value in phase II was controlled at 5.4, 5.7, 6.0, 6.3 and 6.5, respectively, pH 6.5 was found to be optimal for residual suga…

In the 1980s, while the deregulation of broadcasting picked up speed across Europe, advertising industry trade associations equated «commercial speech» with «free speech» and placed renewed stress on the importance of self-regulation. In the debate on «Television without Frontiers» in the European Community and the Council of Europe, advertising trade associations -representing advertisers, agencies and the media-emphasize that self-regulation sh…
Bureaucratic Innovation and Economic Development in the Middle East: A Study of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the Sudan
Economic policy in the Arab world is dominated by the bureaucracy which plans, coordinates, and implements development plans; controls the allocation of the state's natural resources; and is increasingly used by Arab states to regulate the economic activities of their citizens. This paper provides an empirical assessment of bureaucratic innovation and its relationship to economic development in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the Sudan. The data are der…
