This study investigates regional variations in the factors associated with acceptance and actual experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) among married women in northern and southern Nigeria - two regions with distinct socio-cultural and economic differences. Data from the 2018 demographic and health survey are analysed to compare these two regions. The sample comprised married/living-with-partner women within the reproductive age of 15-49. …

The Application of Human Capital Theory and Educational Signalling Theory to Explain Parental Influences on the Chinese Population’s Social Mobility Opportunities
Existing studies argue life chances are, in part, vertically reproduced. Such a statement is applicable to the Chinese contexts as, but not limited to, parental hukou status, to some extent, determines the life chances their children receive. In this essay, the author would like to introduce human capital theory (HCT) and educational signalling theory (EST), and assess how the applications of each of these two models can enrich the understanding …
Revisiting the “parallel lives” thesis: Neighbourhood attachment and residential integration of ethnic minorities in England
Recent debates about the failures of multiculturalism have questioned whether ethnic minorities gradually integrate into the British society or instead lead “parallel lives” in segregated communities. Using nationally representative data (2011–2012), we contribute to the debate by investigating the associations between ethnic minority neighbourhood attachment and neighbourhood ethnic composition. Our results show that although all ethnic minoriti…
Refugees in Hong Kong: Developing the Legal Framework for Socio-Economic Rights Protection
Using a socio-economic rights framework, this article evaluates government policy relating to the treatment of refugees in Hong Kong. While there has been much scholarly and judicial consideration of the high standards of procedural fairness that Hong Kong must meet in screening refugee claims, there has been less attention paid to the socio-economic conditions of refugees in the territory as they await a durable solution. Hong Kong’s general pol…
Gentrification, Education and Exclusionary Displacement in E ast L ondon
In this article we draw on P eter M arcuse's discussion of different types of displacement using evidence from a recent study we conducted in East London to argue that there is clear evidence of ‘exclusionary displacement’ and ‘displacement pressure’ in terms of education and specifically the choice of schooling. We show how the incoming middle classes in the V ictoria P ark area of inner E ast L ondon have displaced not only existing poor reside…
I Wanted My Child to Go to a More Mixed School: Schooling and Ethnic Mix in East London
The minority ethnic population of Britain has grown rapidly in recent decades, but the percentage of minority ethnic pupils has increased more rapidly. This is particularly the case in inner London where over 50% of secondary school pupils are now from minority ethnic groups. The paper examines the issue of schooling and ethnic mix in East London with a focus on parental perceptions of school ethnic mix and parental decision making. It draws on s…

Inward and Upward: Marking Out Social Class Change in London, 1981—2001
Converting the 2001 census NS-SEC categories back into SEG categories for the 1981 and 1991 censuses, the authors show that there is a continued process of class upgrading occurring within Greater London compared with the rest of England and Wales. Inner London continues to see an increase in the proportion of residents in the higher social classes (particularly in the boroughs that were already gentrified in the centre and west of the centre). I…
The best, the worst and the average: Secondary school choice and education performance in East London
In this paper we investigate whether the distance between school and the pupil’s home is related to social background in a six borough area of East London. Also investigated is the extent to which schools in the area perform in line with expectations on the basis of the social composition of their intake. The research involves analysis of the Pupil Level Annual School Census (PLASC) to which geodemographic codes supplied by Experian have been att…
Local Economic Development Initiatives and the Transition From Training and Enterprise Councils to New Institutional Structures in England: Partnership, discretion and local flexibility
Current British government economic development policy emphasises regional and sub-regional scale, multi-agent initiatives that form part of national frameworks to encourage a ‘bottom up’ approach to economic development. An emphasis on local multi-agent initiatives was also the mission of Training and Enterprise Councils (TECs). Using new survey evidence this article tracks the progress of a number of initiatives established under the TECs, usin…
Social Background, Ethnicity, School Composition and Educational Attainment in East London
This paper discusses the effect of social background and ethnicity on educational performance in an area with traditionally poor levels of attainment. It begins by examining the variation in school performance for London and specifically east London. It shows how the disadvantaged nature of the area, as measured by such variables as Mosaic group and ethnic heritage, helps to explain the poor results at GCSE. The paper then changes the focus to sc…

Organised for Inward Investment? Development Agencies, Local Government, and Firms in the Inward Investment Process
Inward investment promotion and aftercare remain central aspects of local economic development for English Regional Development Agencies, Scottish and Welsh development bodies, and local authorities in Britain. In many cases, partnership and consultation mechanisms have become integral to attracting inward investment and providing aftercare. Inward investment is thus an important area in which to explore interinstitutional relations between agent…
The End of TECs: A Challenge for Partners and Successor Bodies to Maintain Discretionary Activity
This paper examines the scale and form of discretionary activity in Training and Enterprise Councils (TECs). Discretionary activity was a key aspect of TECs. In particular it underpinned their role to be flexible local agents offering leadership and finance to lever partnerships with other agents. The paper examines TEC discretionary activity at the peak of its development in 2000. This amounted to about 200m per annum. Their activity covered fie…
The Economic Development Role of English RDAs: The Need for Greater Discretionary Power
In the late 1990s Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) were introduced into the English economic development policy and partnership landscape. Cited as a way in which to improve regional competitiveness and innovation, their task is to build institutional capacity by creating a strategic context for sub-regional organizations and fostering partnerships. This article examines developing inter-institutional relations between RDAs, sub-regional orga…
