Surveying blind and visually impaired people about the accessibility and usability of urban parks in Hungary
For the programming period of 2021–2027, the European Union (EU) encourages and supports cities and towns across the community to take action to enlarge their green infrastructure and develop and improve urban green spaces. As the provision of equal opportunities is a horizontal principle of the EU, the needs of vulnerable and disabled people are crucial to consider in developments. Using survey data from 102 respondents in Hungary, this paper ex…
Surveying public perceptions of urban mobility in a medium-sized city in Brazil
Due to urban sprawl and the increase in the number of motorized vehicles, even medium-sized cities are now struggling with mobility problems that primarily affected large cities. In response, cities in Brazil were required to create an urban mobility plan to promote more sustainable modes of transportation. The limited public participation in the development of such plans, combined with often inadequate infrastructure and safety concerns, might c…
Analyzing urban parks’ spatial integration in Budapest to understand changes in visitation patterns during the Covid-19 pandemic
Globally, dramatic changes in park visitation have accompanied the COVID-19 pandemic. In general, cities have experienced an overall increase in park visitation after strict lockdowns imposed in the pandemic’s first wave have been removed. However, previous research conducted in Hungary has demonstrated that park visitation varied across parks with different sizes and locations in the city. We hypothesized that the degree of the park’s integratio…
A sacrifice for the greater good? On the main drivers of excessive land take and land use change in Hungary
Despite continuous population decline or stagnation, many Central and Eastern European cities experience urban sprawl and expansion, accompanied by excessive land take and land use change. This paper investigates recent trends in land take and land use change in Hungarian cities, aiming to identify the drivers of these processes. The study utilizes the Urban Atlas (UA) databases from 2006 and 2018 to analyze land use change in selected Hungarian …
A GIS-based assessment of different income groups’ access to multiple types of green areas in Budapest, Hungary
A growing body of literature demonstrates that the accessibility of urban green spaces may differ across ethnic, minority, racial, and socioeconomic groups. In post-socialist Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, income has become the most critical factor influencing where people may reside in a city, as well as to the extent to which they can access city services. This paper investigates socioeconomic disparities in access to green areas…
Understanding the increasing market share of the academic publisher “Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute” in the publication output of Central and Eastern European countries
As the open access movement has gained widespread popularity in the scientific community, academic publishers have gradually adapted to the new environment. The pioneer open access journals have turned themselves into megajournals, and the subscription-based publishers have established open access branches and have turned subscription-based journals into hybrid ones. Maybe the most dramatic outcome of the open access boom is the market entry of s…
The availability of green spaces for different socio-economic groups in cities
The provision of urban green spaces (UGS) within a reasonable walking distance/time for each resident has become a major challenge of urban planning. We provide a novel method to map the availability of UGS for different socio-economic groups in cities using a demand–supply composite index (DSCI). Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, has been chosen to test how the DSCI works. The results show significant differences in the availability of UGS …
Measuring socio-economic disparities in green space availability in post-socialist cities
Since the collapse of communism, countries in Central and Eastern Europe have experienced significant socio-economic changes that have affected the urban landscape and the spatial organization of cities. These processes have also generated significant changes in the availability of urban green spaces for local residents, resulting in new forms of inequalities. In the light of recent debate on socio-spatial segregation, the concept of environmenta…
Access to urban green spaces and environmental inequality in post-socialist cities
Access to urban green spaces and environmental inequalities are increasingly on the agenda in contemporary cities due to increasing density of people, widening social inequalities, and limited access to Urban Green Spaces (UGS). This is even so in post-socialist cities where recent urban sprawl and suburbanisation could be strongly linked to the scarcity of adequate green spaces in the inner-parts of cities. This paper examines the provision and …

Modelling the shifting command and control function of cities through a gravity model based bidimensional regression analysis
Ranking Asia-Pacific cities
Over the past decade the world economy has undergone significant changes with an impact not only on national economies but also on the key cities from which that world economy is largely being controlled. In this study, we use Forbes’ ‘Global 2000’ data on the headquarter location and size of the world’s leading multinational corporations in order to examine the shifting relative position of leading Asia-Pacific cities as command and control cent…
A világgazdaság irányító és ellenőrző központjai 2012-ben
Napjainkban a városokkal foglalkozó társadalomtudományi kutatások tekintélyes része fókuszál azokra a városokra, amelyek a globális gazdaságban meghatározó irányító és ellenőrző funkciókkal rendelkeznek. Az 1980-as évek közepétől ezekben a kutatásokban sokszor világvárosokként vagy globális városokként azonosítják a gazdaságirányítás csomópontjait (John Friedmann és Saskia Sassen hatására), elsősorban a „fejlett termelést segítő szolgáltatások” m…

We employ alluvial diagrams (Rosvall and Bergstrom, 2010) to map the evolution of interweaving hierarchical and regional tendencies in the transnational urban networks created by globalizing producer services firms (Derudder et al., 2003; Taylor et al., 2012). We first applied a hierarchical cluster analysis to 139 leading cities for 2000, 2004 and 2010 respectively, whereby cities are grouped based on their portfolio of firms. In the alluvial di…
Regions and regional centres in Hungary
In parallel with the change of the political-economic regime, the Hungarian system of public administration faced new challenges. Under state socialism, medium-level public administration was represented by the counties, which exercised strong control over the local governments of settlements in the hierarchic system of public administration. During the reforms of the public administration after the change of the political regime, the administrat…

Analysis of Leading Cities in Central Europe: Control of Regional Economy Nowadays, one of the characteristic orientations in social science studies focusing on cities is the ranking of cities, as well as the definition of the world's leading cities (world cities, global cities) on the basis of various criteria. Central European countries are given just a minor role in these researches, particularly in comparison with German cities with their con…
A közép-európai régió nagyvárosainak gazdaságirányító szerepe
A regionális központok szerepének változása Magyarország városhálózatában a szabad királyi városoktól a Nuts régióközpontokig
Jelen tanulmány a magyarországi regionális centrumok városhálózatban betöltött pozícióváltozásait követi nyomon a szabad királyi városoktól a NUTS 2 tervezési-statisztikai régiók kialakításáig. A nagyvárosok szempontjából napjaink egyik legfontosabb kérdése, hogy a regionális centrumok (egyúttal pólusvárosok) lesznek-e a NUTS 2 régiók tényleges központjai, vagyis az évszázados fejlődéssel kialakult centrumokkal szemben létezik-e más alternatíva
