Vis-à-vis: Signification does not necessitate backward causation
The following paper examines the metaphysics of signification in John Deely’s work and presents two arguments: (1) that Deely’s metaphysics sanction backwards causation in signification, and (2) that there may be a more parsimonious view that can be defended. The paper briefly examines the background of Peirce’s metaphysics and then addresses his specific notion of semiotic causality, including the relevance of the vis a prospecto in his work. I …
The semiotics of culture in light of commonalities and conflicts in Lotmanian and Peircean theories
This article will outline in general lines the tenets of Lotmanian and Peircean semiotics, observing their possible intersections and interactions as well as their theoretical incompatibilities. As history would have it, both traditions stem from different roots, and their playing along cannot be taken for granted. In examining these historical roots in light of the naturalizing project of current (bio)semiotics, we can hope to find some points t…
How to detonate a semiotic bomb: The dynamics of Lotmanian explosion in the semiosphere
Lotmanian cultural dynamics involve change through textual interaction. Texts, offering vehicles for information, play a central role in this, with cultural change happening in two modes: gradual and explosive instances of texts that alter the semiosphere. This paper focuses on the process of explosion–an unpredictable mode of change in Lotmanian theory–through a metaphorical methodology, by introducing the concept of semiotic bomb. A semiotic bo…
Transhumanism, Society and Education: An Edusemiotic Approach
We propose a semiotic framework to underpin a posthumanist philosophy of education, as contrasted to technological determinism. A recent approach to educational processes as semiotic phenomena lends itself as a philosophy to understand the current interplay between education and technology. This view is aligned with the transhumanist movement to defend techno-scientific progress as fundamental to human development. Particularly, we adopt a semiot…
Analyzing the meaning of social images during pandemic lockdown
Our paper focuses on the semiotic analysis of images as shot by photojournalists. The photographs we analyze were taken in two different cities in Spain during a period of strict enclosure. For the analysis, we asked photojournalists to select several images. Once we received a selection, we analyzed the content of the images and categorized them. We processed the resulting information through statistical methods. The results show the importance …
Metatheoretical Commitments in the Humanities: Interdisciplinary research programs and metasemiotics
The interdisciplinary grasp of semiotics makes it a good window into how humanities-based research programs deal with the issues of specific theoretical commitments, raising the stakes on how to do theory in a setting of disparity of approaches and methods. The particular case of biosemiotics as a naturalized instance of semiotics is used as a specific example of an interdisciplinary combination of theory and scientific practice to address the ne…
Everything seems so settled here: The conceivability of post-Peircean biosemiotics
Theory change is a slow, tortuous process. Problems associated with how we communicate ideas and how these ideas are received by our peers become catalysts for change in how we ourselves perceive and sanction what the discipline is capable of doing. Some parts of semiotics, and particularly biosemiotics, have come under critical scrutiny because of their heavy commitment to Peircean philosophy, but at the same time, the contributions of Peircean …
