Theorising the Conjuncture Through Gaza
This paper deploys a Gramscian theorisation of the conjuncture to argue that the contemporary global political economy is becoming constituted through the destruction of Gaza. It contends that Gaza's destruction illuminates the current conjuncture as an intensification of earlier authoritarian neoliberal tendencies. First, Gaza functions as a key testing ground for technologies of containment, policing and destruction—technologies that are centra…
A platform fix? Contextualizing the multidimensional fix of the platform economy in the capitalist longue duréee
Given the multiple ongoing crises currently pervading neoliberalism, as well as the growing debate on the role of digital platforms in capitalism as such, this article asks: to what extent do platforms truly succeed in providing the current form of capitalism with the tools necessary to reproduce itself in a relatively durable way? To examine this, this paper draws on Beverly Silver’s work and breaks down the understanding of the ‘fix’ into four …
Renewable energy and EU-led authoritarian neoliberalization
In light of the recent rise of authoritarianism and processes of ‘democratic backsliding’ in the Balkans (and other parts of CEE), the EU has projected an image of itself as a bastion of democracy and a counterweight to authoritarian tendencies and regimes. In contrast, this article points to the ways in which the EU – through its enlargement strategy – has legitimized authoritarian practices in candidate states. These practices have been inheren…
Continuity or change? Platforms and the hybridization of neoliberal institutional contexts
In recent years, a wide range of contributions have sought to conceptualize the emergent effects of platforms on contemporary capitalism(s). One strand of literature has emphasized the novelty of platforms, stressing their disruptive features and proclaiming the rise of a new era - platform/digital capitalism. Another strand has tended to position platforms within the longue durée of capitalist transformation, focusing on the continuities and his…
The role of the urban scale in anchoring authoritarian neoliberalism
In recent years, ‘authoritarian neoliberalism’ has emerged as a leading framework for understanding the specificities of neoliberalization post-2007/8 financial crisis. The concept has acquired particular salience in the study of urban transformations as cities have been portrayed as key sites for the articulation of authoritarian neoliberalism. This paper argues against a purely territorial conceptualization of authoritarian neoliberalism in cit…
Variegated neoliberalization and institutional hierarchies
A decade ago, in their article on 'variegated neoliberalization', political geographers Brenner, Peck and Theodore proposed what has become one of the leading theoretical conceptualizations of neoliberalism. By developing a process-based account of neoliberal transformations, they successfully trace neoliberalization across geographies and temporalities, accounting for both its systemic and contingent qualities. In this paper, I suggest that the …
Democracy struggles
This book sets out to explain the “associational revolution” – the drastic expansion of the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) sector – that took place in post-socialist, post-conflict Serbia from
