Psychometric properties of a short form of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D-10) scale for screening depressive symptoms in healthy community dwelling older adults
Quality of Life for 19,114 participants in the ASPREE (ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly) study and their association with sociodemographic and modifiable lifestyle risk factors
Associations between community-level disaster exposure and individual-level changes in disability and risk of death for older Americans
Cardiovascular risk outcome and program evaluation of a cluster randomised controlled trial of a community-based, lay peer led program for people with diabetes
The 2013 Global Burden of Disease Study demonstrated the increasing burden of diabetes and the challenge it poses to the health systems of all countries. The chronic and complex nature of diabetes requires active self-management by patients in addition to clinical management in order to achieve optimal glycaemic control and appropriate use of available clinical services. This study is an evaluation of a “real world” peer support program aimed at …
Disease Mapping and Regression with Count Data in the Presence of Overdispersion and Spatial Autocorrelation: A Bayesian Model Averaging Approach
This paper applies the generalised linear model for modelling geographical variation to esophageal cancer incidence data in the Caspian region of Iran. The data have a complex and hierarchical structure that makes them suitable for hierarchical analysis using Bayesian techniques, but with care required to deal with problems arising from counts of events observed in small geographical areas when overdispersion and residual spatial autocorrelation …
Change in well-being amongst participants in a four-month pedometer-based workplace health program
Clinically relevant immediate and sustained improvements in well-being were observed after participation in the health program. These results suggest that participation in workplace programs, such as the one evaluated here, also has the potential to improve well-being
Low Rates of Postpartum Glucose Screening Among Indigenous and non-Indigenous Women in Australia with Gestational Diabetes
Cluster randomised controlled trial of a peer-led lifestyle intervention program: Study protocol for the Kerala diabetes prevention program
Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry: ACTRN12611000262909
Cluster randomized controlled trial of a peer support program for people with diabetes: Study protocol for the Australasian peers for progress study

Participant characteristics associated with greater reductions in waist circumference during a four-month, pedometer-based, workplace health program
While employees with 'high-risk' WC at baseline experienced the greatest improvements in WC, the other variables associated with greater WC improvement were generally indicators of better baseline health. These results indicate that employees who started with better health, potentially due to lifestyle or recent behavioural changes, were more likely to respond positively to the program. Future health program initiators should think innovatively t…
The duration of obesity and the risk of type 2 diabetes
Objective The evidence for the association between obesity and the risk of type 2 diabetes has been derived mainly from the analysis of the degree of obesity. The role of the duration of obesity as an independent risk has not been fully explored. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between the duration of obesity and the risk of type 2 diabetes. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting The Framingham Heart Study …
Trends in BMI of urban Australian adults, 1980–2000
Objective To analyse changes in the distribution of BMI in Australia between 1980 and 2000. Design Data were from the 1980, 1983 and 1989 National Heart Foundation Risk Factor Prevalence Study, the 1995 National Nutrition Survey and the 1999/2000 Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study. Survey participants were aged 25–64 years and resident in Australian capital cities. BMI was calculated as weight divided by height squared (kg/m 2 ), wh…
Inequalities in cardiovascular disease mortality: The role of behavioural, physiological and social risk factors
BACKGROUND: While the relationship between socio-economic disadvantage and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is well established, the role that traditional cardiovascular risk factors play in this association remains unclear. The authors examined the association between education attainment and CVD mortality and the extent to which behavioural, social and physiological factors explained this relationship. METHODS: Adults (n=38,355) aged 40-69 years li…
Job strain — Attributable depression in a sample of working Australians: Assessing the contribution to health inequalities
Job strain and associated depression risks represent a substantial, preventable, and inequitably distributed public health problem. The social patterning of job strain-attributable depression parallels the social patterning of mental illness, suggesting that job strain is an important contributor to mental health inequalities. The numbers of compensated 'mental stress' claims compared to job strain-attributable depression cases suggest that there…
Onset of adolescent eating disorders: Population based cohort study over 3 years
Objective: To study the predictors of new eating disorders in an adolescent cohort. Design: Cohort study over 3 years with six waves. Subjects: Students, initially aged 14-15 years, from 44 secondary schools in the state of Victoria, Australia. Outcome measures: Weight (kg), height (cm), dieting (adolescent dieting scale), psychiatric morbidity (revised clinical interview schedule), and eating disorder (branched eating disorders test). Eating dis…
Flaws in the Nuremberg Legacy: An Impediment to International War Crimes Tribunals' Prosecution of Crimes Against Humanity
This article examines the legal and historical issues that arose at Nuremberg and that have frustrated subsequent efforts—through the 1998 charter of the International War Crimes Tribunal—to establish an international framework for prosecuting crimes against humanity. Wolfe concludes that the main obstacle to the successful establishment of such a tribunal continues to be the abiding reluctance of nations to yield elements of their sovereignty to…
Depression, anxiety, and smoking initiation: A prospective study over 3 years
OBJECTIVES: This report considers the extent to which depression and anxiety predict smoking onset in adolescence. METHODS: A 6-wave cohort design was used to study a sample of 14- and 15-year-old students (n = 2032) drawn from 44 secondary schools in the state of Victoria, Australia. The students were surveyed between 1992 and 1995 with a computerized questionnaire that included a 7-day retrospective diary for tobacco use and a structured psychi…

Psychosocial and behavioral factors differentiating past drinkers and life-long abstainers
Studies of the health effects associated with alcohol consumption often use a single non-drinker category as a referent. In this community study (N = 1,672) from Tecumseh, Michigan, past drinkers (N = 191) and life-long abstainers (N = 215) differed substantially for certain behavioral and psychosocial factors. In addition, 65 per cent of the male and 36 per cent of the female non-drinkers were past drinkers. Our findings suggest that a single no…
Surface Feature Interpolation on Two-Dimensional Time-Space Maps
A procedure is described for interpolating surface features on a map based on a two-dimensional time-space configuration of points. Initially an objective procedure is used to give a best fit of a previously obtained time-space configuration of points to the physical configuration of the same points. The resultant set of vectors, each of which shows the residual displacement between a point in time space and physical space, is used as the basis o…
