  • From urban modelling to city digital twins – Reflections from the applied urban modelling (AUM) symposia

Open Access•Li Wan, Ying Jin et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2026

City digital twins (CDTs), as digital replica of urban systems and development processes, have been heralded as the next-generation technology for urban planning and management. Arguably, the concept of CDTs is not new. Prior to CDTs, applied urban modelling has been playing a pivot role in supporting city and infrastructure planning since the 1960s. Examining CDTs in relation to conventional urban models can thus offer valuable insights into the…

  • Compact City and Urban Sprawl

Frans M Dieleman, FRANS DIELEMAN et al.•ARTICLE•Built Environment•2004

Both in Europe and North America there is a growing concern about the development of urban form, especially deconcentration of urban land use in the form of urban sprawl. This has unintentional consequences such as city centre decline, increased reliance on the use of the private car, and the loss of open space. While governments try to regulate the development of urban form, there are no easy solutions. However, policies such as 'new urbanism' a…

  • Accessibility and Economic Development in Europe

Roger Vickerman, Klaus Spiekermann et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•1999•Cited by: 85•References: 3

There is continuing debate on the role of transport infrastructure and changes in accessibility on regional economic development. The emphasis in recent European Union policy on the development of trans-European Networks (TENs) provides a focus for a re-evaluation. Much of the debate assumes that improvements in accessibility will lead to economic development and, by implication, to greater cohesion. This paper identifies some of the major diffic…

  • Operational Urban Models State of the Art

    M Wegener•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Planning…•1994•Cited by: 34

Twenty years after Lee's "Requiem for Large-Scale Models", the urban modeling field is again full of life. There exist a dozen or so operational urban models of varying degrees of comprehensiveness and sophistication, which have been and are being applied to real-life metropolitan regions for purposes of research and/or policy analysis. The paper views the current state of the art of operational "integrated" urban models. It starts by presenting …

  • Transport Network Equilibrium and Regional Deconcentration

    Open Access•M Wegener•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1986•References: 16

Processes of urban and regional change can be classified in terms of their temporal characteristics as fast-adjusting, medium-response, or inert. Based on this classification, a modelling approach is presented that combines (1) a fast-adjusting equilibrium-type transport model, (2) a medium-response residential occupation (housing-market) model, and (3) a strongly lagged residential location (housing-construction) model. It is suggested that such…
