  • The Distribution of Socioeconomic Deprivation Within the Māori and European Populations in Aotearoa New Zealand, 1991, 2001, and 2023

Open Access•Jarden Kuramaiki Lacey, Clare Salmond et al.•ARTICLE•Kōtuitui New Zealand Journal of…•2026

This study aimed to determine the distribution of socioeconomic deprivation within the Māori and European populations in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1991, 2001, and 2023. NZDep is an index of relative socioeconomic deprivation for small areas based on data from the Census of Population and Dwellings. A socioeconomic deprivation score from 1 (least socioeconomically deprived 10% of small areas) to 10 (most socioeconomically deprived 10%) was assigned …

  • A comparison of the NZDep and New Zealand IMD indexes of socioeconomic deprivation

Open Access•Peter Crampton, Clare Salmond et al.•ARTICLE•Kōtuitui New Zealand Journal of…•2019•References: 6

The aims of this study were to compare the NZ Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) with the NZDep index of socioeconomic deprivation in terms of their: (1) theoretical and methodological approaches; (2) use of small areas; (3) rankings of small areas; and (4) relationships with various health and social outcomes. Literature sources were reviewed for aim 1. The data sources for aims 2–4, all contained within Statistics New Zealand’s Integrated Da…

  • The New Zealand Index of Neighbourhood Social Fragmentation: Integrating Theory and Data

    Open Access•Vivienne C Ivory, Vivienne Ivory et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 52

We report on the development and validation of a neighbourhood measure of social fragmentation. Firstly, we developed a theoretical model of neighbourhood-level social fragmentation, as the structural antecedent to collective social functioning, with three domains (attachment, resources, and means of sharing of norms and values). Secondly, utilising the New Zealand 1996 and 2001 Censuses, variables were constructed to create the New Zealand Index…

  • Heterogeneity of deprivation within very small areas: Figure 1

    Clare Salmond, P Crampton•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Area based measures of deprivation are used for resource allocation and research. In both these uses there is continuing debate about the likely proportion of deprived people who would be missed if area based indices were used for interventions or targeting resources.1–4 This report uses the same source deprivation variables at area and individual levels to quantify the degree of deprivation heterogeneity within very small areas using data from t…

  • Asthma prevalence and deprivation: A small area analysis

Clare Salmond, Peter Crampton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Cited by: 4•References: 26

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between the prevalence of asthma symptoms in adults and deprivation in the area of residence. DESIGN: Two complementary surveys carried out between 1991-1993 yielding adult asthma symptom prevalence throughout New Zealand. Deprivation is measured by the NZDep91 index of deprivation for small areas. SETTING: New Zealand. PARTICIPANTS: A random sample of 25,042 adults aged 20-50 years. MAIN RESULTS: Afte…
