From eco-social intent to green growth drift: The governance of a sustainable tourism tax
This study examines the disconnect between sustainability rhetoric and fiscal practice in the Balearic Islands' tourism tax policy (Spain). Using a novel AI-assisted method, we analyze 297 tax-funded projects worth €845.8 million and 357 civil society proposals from 2016 to 2025. Findings reveal a shift from eco-social aims toward a green growth agenda, prioritizing competitiveness over redistribution or ecological limits. Despite growing public …
Fair vs. fake touristic degrowth
This contribution aims to advance consideration of the potential and pitfalls entailed in discussions of degrowth within tourism development. Many mass tourist destinations suffer from saturation impacting local working conditions, access to housing and the collective enjoyment of public goods, among the many common drawbacks of so-called ‘overtourism’. Yet proposals to address the negative impacts of mass tourism can become contradictory or even…

Spanish Tourism Geographies: Territorial Diversity and Different Approaches
Identifying the sustainability indicators of overtourism and undertourism in Majorca
This paper is a first attempt to propose a multidimensional study of overtourism and undertourism in Majorca, a Spanish island and one of the world’s leading mass tourist destinations. The study was conducted before and after the pandemic started through a survey to local stakeholders. They were asked for their perceptions of overtourism and undertourism, what problems these phenomena generate, which sustainability indicator might be used to meas…
Environmental struggles and insularity: The right to nature in Mallorca and Tenerife
Islands worldwide experience commodification of land and natural resources that is closely related to touristic activity and urbanization. Islands represent the epitome of commodified represented spaces, power, and territorialization, and in this regard, focusing on islands may shed light on how the production of socio-natures shapes the dynamics of capital accumulation, dispossession, and resistance. We explore the contestation of urban-tourist …
Pathways to post-capitalist tourism
Potential to identify and cultivate forms of post-capitalism in tourism development has yet to be explored in depth in current research. Tourism is one of the world's largest industries, and hence a powerful global political and socio-economic force. Yet numerous problems associated with conventional tourism development have been documented over the years, problems now greatly exacerbated by impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Calls for sus…
Covid-19 as a stimulus for growth? The Spanish journalistic treatment of tourism during confinement
COVID-19 has had a negative effect on tourism activity, highlighting the dependence that many places have on it. Planners and managers have denounced the situation and have addressed it according to their interests: for or against regrowth as a means to overcome this crisis. The academic debate is focused on this polarisation and the possibility that this crisis constitutes an opportunity for change towards a degrowth approach in tourism. However…
De casal a hotel boutique al Centre Històric de Palma (2012-2020): From house to boutique hotel in Palma’s historic centre (2012-2020)
Short-term rentals and the rentier growth coalition in Pollença (Majorca)
Since the beginning of the 2008 economic crisis, Majorca has experienced an increase in tourism, which has been made possible partly by the expansion of short-term renting. Research on short-term rentals is a growing field in critical urban and tourism geographies. This paper contributes to these fields by examining the structure of actors involved in the development of short-term rentals and their power relations. Our case study focuses on the m…
Tourism and Degrowth: Towards a Truly Sustainable Tourism
Beyond the right to the island: Exploring protests against the neoliberalization of nature in tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain)
Islands worldwide experience the commodification of land and natural resources owing to touristic activities and urbanization. Islands represent the epitome of commodified spaces, power, and territorialization. Therefore, focusing on islands reveals how the production of socionatures shapes the dynamics of capital accumulation, dispossession, and resistance. By paying attention to the interplay between insularity and socioecological transformatio…
Tourism and degrowth: An emerging agenda for research and praxis
This article outlines a conceptual framework and research agenda for exploring the relationship between tourism and degrowth. Rapid and uneven expansion of tourism as a response to the 2008 economic crisis has proceeded in parallel with the rise of social discontent concerning so-called “overtourism.” Despite decades of concerted global effort to achieve sustainable development, meanwhile, socioecological conflicts and inequality have rarely reve…
