  • Echoes of Silenced Voices

    Timothy Power, Timothy J Power•ARTICLE•Phoenix•2025

Sophocles’ Electra 379–82 contain allusions to passages in Antigone , the Oresteia , and the Odyssey involving the tyrannical suppression of politically inconvenient voices. The reverberations of these allusions throughout Electra add depth and scope to the representation of the conflict among Electra, Aegisthus, and Clytemnestra, calling particular attention to the political valence of Electra’s lamentation and the tyrants’ plan to imprison and …

Roberto Martínez‐Maldonado, Doug Elliott et al.•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2022

Learning Analytics (LA) systems can offer new insights into learners’ behaviours through analysis of multiple data streams. There remains however a dearth of research about how LA interfaces can enable effective communication of educationally meaningful insights to teachers and learners. This highlights the need for a participatory, horizontal co-design process for LA systems. Inspired by the notion of translucence, this paper presents LAT-EP (Le…

  • Sappho’s Parachoral Monody

    Open Access•Timothy Power•CHAPTER•Genre in Archaic and Classical…•2019

In this chapter, I propose that certain songs of Sappho that have been regarded as choral may in fact have been monodic, involving choruses as "characters" represented or quoted within a solo song rather than as actual performers. I introduce the concept of "parachorality" to describe such representations, and Sappho's more general tendency to engage with choreia to create emotional, thematic, rhetorical, and narrative effects within her monodic …

  • Musical Persuasion in Early Greece

    Timothy Power•BOOK•Mercury's Wings•2017

Solon and other politicians used music, while Pindar and other poets introduced political motifs into p…
