Timely childhood vaccination in Israel
A large proportion of children do not receive vaccines within the recommended timeframe. This study examined ethnic and socioeconomic differences in age-appropriate immunization of children in Israel, where immunization is freely available. Percent of children receiving MMR/V at 12–13 months, and four doses of DTP/IPV/Hib by 18 months were obtained from the National Programme for Quality Measures between 2015 and 2018. Ethnic group (Jewish vs Ara…
Tobacco Smoke Exposure According to Location of Home Smoking in Israel
Young children are particularly vulnerable to harms from tobacco smoke exposure (TSE). This study aimed to compare TSE: (1) between children who live in smoking families and those who do not; and (2) among children who live in smoking households with varying smoking locations. The data came from two studies that were conducted concurrently in Israel (2016-2018). Study 1: a randomized controlled trial of smoking families ( n = 159); Study 2: a coh…
Effect of Socioeconomic and Ethnic Characteristics on Covid-19 Infection
Sociodemographic disparities in Covid-19 burden
BACKGROUND: Worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic hit weakest populations hardest, with socioeconomic (SE), racial and ethnic disparities in COVID-19 burden. The study aimed to analyse patterns of SE and ethnic disparities in morbidity, hospitalisation, and vaccination throughout four pandemic waves. METHODS: A retrospective-archive study was conducted in Israel from 11 March 2020 to 1 December 2021, with data on confirmed cases, hospitalisations, mor…
Socioeconomic gradient in Covid-19 vaccination
Low SES groups and the Arab ethnic minority demonstrated disparities in vaccine uptake, which were greater for the second and third, compared with the first vaccine dose. Strategies to address vaccination inequity will need to identify barriers, provide targeted information, and include trust-building in disadvantaged communities
Tipping the scales
Decision makers should consider ways to incorporate the positive changes which occurred as part of the exit strategy. Societies should invest in building resources to improve both individual and community resilience to help people be better prepared and more able to cope and adapt in times of crisis. Special emphasis should be given to weaker populations most affected by external changes, including older people, low socioeconomic groups, those wi…
“I can’t stand it…but I do it sometimes” parental smoking around children
Findings shed light on some of the difficulties faced by smoking parents and obstacles to maintaining a smoke-free environment for their children, providing insight for the type of information and support required to help parents better protect their children from exposure to tobacco smoke. Awareness of health risks associated with secondhand smoke was demonstrated, yet parents in smoking families were confused regarding which rules and behaviour…
Parental Perceptions of Children’s Exposure to Tobacco Smoke and Parental Smoking Behaviour
Around 40% of children are exposed to tobacco smoke, increasing their risk of poor health. Previous research has demonstrated misunderstanding among smoking parents regarding children's exposure. The parental perceptions of exposure (PPE) measure uses visual and textual vignettes to assess awareness of exposure to smoke. The study aimed to determine whether PPE is related to biochemical and reported measures of exposure in children with smoking p…
Changing Exposure Perceptions
Children who live with smokers are at risk of poor health, and of becoming smokers themselves. Misperceptions of the nature of tobacco smoke exposure have been demonstrated among parents, resulting in continued smoking in their children's environment. This study aimed to change parents' perceptions of exposure by providing information on second- and third-hand exposure and personalised information on children's exposure [NIH registry (NCT02867241…
Coping with the Covid-19 pandemic – the role of leadership in the Arab ethnic minority in Israel
Despite a disproportionate burden of underlying illness, the Arab population did not fulfil initial predictions during the first wave of the COVID-19 outbreak and maintained low numbers of infections and deaths. This contrasts with reports of increased mortality in ethnic minorities and economically disadvantaged populations in other countries, and with high rates of infection in the ultra-Orthodox sector in Israel. Effective leadership and coope…
Parental perceptions of children’s exposure to tobacco smoke
Results provide supporting evidence for the PPE as a reliable and valid construct, which can be feasibly measured. Smokers perceived exposure less frequently than non-smokers. This new measure can shed light on parental smoking behaviour and may help us to increase parental awareness of exposure in order to potentially reduce children's exposure to tobacco smoke
Feasibility of Measuring Tobacco Smoke Air Pollution in Homes
Tobacco smoke air pollution (TSAP) measurement may persuade parents to adopt smoke-free homes and thereby reduce harm to children from tobacco smoke in the home. In a pilot study involving 29 smoking families, a Sidepak was used to continuously monitor home PM(2.5) during an 8-h period, Sidepak and/or Dylos monitors provided real-time feedback, and passive nicotine monitors were used to measure home air nicotine for one week. Feedback was provide…
Sense of coherence predicts post-myocardial infarction trajectory of leisure time physical activity
Our evidence suggests that SOC predicts LTPA trajectory post-MI. Assessment of SOC can help identify high-risk MI survivors, who may require additional help in following secondary prevention recommendations which can dramatically improve prognosis
Role of Socioeconomic Status Measures in Long-term Mortality Risk Prediction After Myocardial Infarction
BACKGROUND: The relationship of risk factors to outcomes has traditionally been assessed by measures of association such as odds ratio or hazard ratio and their statistical significance from an adjusted model. However, a strong, highly significant association does not guarantee a gain in stratification capacity. Using recently developed model performance indices, we evaluated the incremental discriminatory power of individual and neighborhood soc…
Cumulative exposure to air pollution and long term outcomes after first acute myocardial infarction
This study addresses some of the gaps in understanding of the prognostic importance of air pollution exposure after myocardial infarction, by allowing a sufficient follow-up period, using a well-defined community cohort, adequately controlling for multiple and multilevel confounding factors and providing extensive data on various outcomes
