Until Women’s Health Is Everywhere, Women’s Health Is Nowhere
This Viewpoint discusses the current state of federal funding for women’s health research in the US and explores options for expanding this funding more broadly
The Association Between Infertility Treatment and Birth Outcomes for Nulliparous Persons Who Gave Birth 35 Years and Older
Disparities in infertility treatment exist. ART was associated with modest but significantly worse outcomes, particularly for singleton births. Continued monitoring of infertility treatment selection and birth outcomes is needed for informed clinical and public policy decisions
Post- Dobbs Abortion Restrictions and the Families They Leave Behind
The June 24, 2022 US Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization resulted in an expansive restriction on abortion access that had been constitutionally guaranteed for nearly half a century. Currently, 14 states have implemented complete bans on abortion with very limited exceptions, and an additional 7 states have implemented abortion bans at 6 to 18 weeks’ gestation. It has been well demonstrated that restrictive polici…
Rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration in the United States
Introduction: While breastfeeding rates in the United States have been increasing, they remain low by international standards with substantial racial, income and education disparities. This study uses recent population-based data to analyze sociodemographic differences in breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exposure to information and education. Methods: We used the 2016-2019 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) to compare brea…
Obstetric Provider Perspectives on Postpartum Patient Navigation for Low-Income Patients
BACKGROUND: Patient navigation programs have shown promise for improving health but are not widely used in obstetric care. Our objective was to understand obstetric provider perspectives on how to implement patient navigation to optimize care during the postpartum period for low-income patients. METHOD: Focus groups were conducted with obstetric physicians, nurses, and social workers who care for low-income pregnant and postpartum patients in an …
Association Between Patient-Prescriber Racial and Ethnic Concordance and Postpartum Pain and Opioid Prescribing
Objective: To evaluate whether patient-prescriber racial and ethnic concordance is associated with postpartum opioid prescribing patterns and patient-reported pain scores. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients who delivered at a tertiary care center between December 1, 2015 and November 30, 2016. Self-identified non-Hispanic white (NHW), non-Hispanic black (NHB), Hispanic, or Asian patients were included. Patient-prescriber pa…

Bridging the Chasm between Pregnancy and Health over the Life Course
Delivery Complications and Postpartum Hospital Use in California
Understanding HIV-Related Pill Aversion as a Distinct Barrier to Medication Adherence
Pill aversion, defined as difficulty swallowing pills without identifiable medical cause, is a poorly characterized barrier to sustained viral suppression for many HIV-infected persons. We aimed to quantify the frequency of self-reported pill aversion, characterize its symptoms, and measure the association between self-reported pill aversion and missing antiretroviral doses. This is a prospective, observational, exploratory survey study of Englis…
