Inscribing uncertainty. Visualizing edu-automation through spatializing techniques
How are educational values and pedagogical approaches inscribed into automated education technologies and their data visualizations? In this article we analyze the design process and technical and pedagogical debates of a team of researchers and developers working on an automated scoring tool for primary school students’ early writing as part of an innovation project. We demonstrate that diagrams and dashboards are not just representations, but a…
Algorithmic Governance, Public Participation and Trust: Citizen-State Relations in a Smart City Project
Two intertwined trends have hit cities all over the world: an increasing drive towards experimentation with citizens as participants that is turning cities into 'living labs' or 'test-beds', and the use of streams of digital data from people and devices for the algorithmic management of urban life following the 'smart city' model. In the visions of smart city designers and developers of data systems, public participation is configured as a matter…
Technomoral Governance: From Techniques of Intervention to Technological Innovation in Politics, Policy and Law
This special issue examines the concept of 'technomoral governance', a framework that describes the intertwining of moral imperatives with technocratic and technological solutions in contemporary political governance. Building on Erica Bornstein and Aradhana Sharma's (2016) notion of 'technomoral politics', which looked at how moral projects become intertwined with legal-technical interventions, we explore how political tactics increasingly rely …
Riders in app time: Exploring the temporal experiences of food delivery platform work
This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork among bicycle food delivery riders in Brussels who worked through the digital platform Deliveroo. The article engages the riders' specific temporal experiences of platform work. Platform work through digital apps creates an image of aspatial real-time. However, using the notion of the 'data double', we demonstrate that the riders not only have to navigate the cityscape of Brussels on their bikes. Th…

The Handbook is organised aroun…
Infrastructures of trust and distrust: The politics and ethics of emerging cryptographic technologies
The authors of this article are engaged in anthropological research on the links between the growing interest in privacy and data security as a technical field and how notions of trust, security and accountability are practised in and beyond technical fields of cryptography, specifically a field called multi-party computation (MPC). They pursue the relationship between trust in different forms of cryptography - academic and activist - and notions…
The financialization of Danish cooperatives and the debasement of a collective housing good
The article tells the story of Danish cooperative housing's radical transformation from a collective housing good and commons to a financialized asset during the 2000s when neoliberal housing reforms were introduced and the mortgage finance market was deregulated. Processes of financialization of collectively owned housing have to be understood not only in relation to the dynamics of the surrounding housing market and political-economic changes b…
Political Economy Comes Home: On the Moral Economies of Housing
Struggles over housing are one of the most pressing social, economic and political issues of our time. Yet questions over access to, plus the redistribution and maintenance of secure housing have only recently begun to be considered anthropologically. Drawing on E.P. Thompson's concept of moral economy, this special issue addresses these questions and considers how contemporary moral economies of housing play out. Citizens try to make their deman…

Faellesskab covers different kinds of belonging and notions of proper togetherness in Danish society, ranging from neighborhood relations at the local level to membership in society at the national level. The Concern for Sociality—Practicing Equality and Hierarchy in Denmark
Equality is one of the concepts that people often associate with Scandinavia. Within anthropology, the works of Marianne Gullestad (1946Gullestad ( -2008))-particularly, her monograph Kitchen-Table Society (1984) and the anthology The Art of Social Relations (1992a)-are among the few attempts to contribute to the theoretical debate on egalitarianism and sociality. With her concept of 'egalitarian individualism', Gullestad inscribes Scandinavia wi…
