  • Environmental Associations of Body Disposal in New Zealand Homicides

    Open Access•Oliver H J Ploeg, Randolph C Grace et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Offender…•2026

This study explores environmental factors associated with homicide in New Zealand, focusing on body disposal. Analysing 383 incidents through the lenses of Temperature Aggression and Routine Activity theories, we examined temporal, spatial, and associated influences. Temporal patterns, including higher homicide rates in the evening and on weekends, generally supported Routine Activity theory, highlighting situational and social factors in the occ…

  • An examination of body disposal patterns in sexual and non-sexual homicides

    Open Access•Oliver H J Ploeg, Randolph C Grace et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2025

Body disposal methods complicate homicide investigations, obscuring links between both demographic factors and crime scene behaviors. This study is a comprehensive empirical assessment of offender and victim demographics, alongside crime scene behaviors, in relation to body disposal methods in homicides. This was done through the examination of 326 homicide cases involving 403 offenders and 334 victims through regression analyses. Key findings re…

  • Predicting decreases in smoking with a cigarette purchase task

    Randolph C Grace, Bronwyn M Kivell et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2014

Background Tobacco excise taxes are known to be effective in reducing smoking at the population level, but less research has examined how individual smokers respond to changes in tax policy. We ask whether price elasticities for individual smokers, derived from simulated demand curves obtained with a cigarette purchase task (CPT), can predict changes in smoking after a tax increase. Method Smokers (N=357) were recruited from four New Zealand citi…

    Open Access•Ralph R Miller, Randolph C Grace•OTHER•Handbook of Psychology, Second…•2012

Conditioning and learning are the means by which organisms modify their behavior in response to changes in the environment. These changes occur within the lifespan of the organism, in contrast to conventional evolution, which supports behavioral changes across generations in response to changes in the environment. The central phenomena of Pavlovian conditioning and instrumental learning are described, followed by a review of the major theoretical…

  • Temporal discounting for monetary and close relationship outcomes

Open Access•Sophie Tayler, Joana Arantes et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2009

The present study extended research on intertemporal choice—in which individuals choose between outcomes that may be received immediately or after a delay—to close relationships. In Experiment 1, New Zealand university students aged 18 to 25 made decisions about hypothetical monetary and relationship outcomes, and in Experiment 2, about relationship outcomes which emphasized companionate or sexual aspects ( N s = 64). Both experiments found effec…

The purpose of the present paper was to test the applicability of the Canter and Larkin (1993 Canter, D. , and Larkin, P. , 1993. • On the Failure of Operationism

    Open Access•Randolph C Grace•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2001

Operationism was proposed as the methodology for a behavioristic psychology in the 1930s, based on ideas from Bridgman's 1927 book, The Logic of Modern Physics. That the practice of operational definitions still persists in psychology has been strongly criticized. The major claim, first made in the 1940s and echoed recently, has been that psychologists misunderstood Bridgman by using operational definitions to produce or elicit new concepts or ph…

  • The Pragmatics of Operationism

    Open Access•Randolph C Grace•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2001

Experimental psychologists in the 1930s erred badly in interpreting Bridgman (1927/1960) to mean that a theoretical construct was scientifically valid given a single set of operations. This mistake was corrected in the 1950s with the adoption of a multiple or convergent operationism, which stimulated the development of cognitive psychology and remains widely used to this day. The major criticisms made by Bickhard, Green, Leahey and Rogers (all 20…
