Migration integration policies as social determinants of health for highly educated immigrants in the United States
Highly educated immigrants are part of the growing population of immigrants who are impacted by the increasingly hostile migration policies in the U.S. This qualitative study used a phenomenological approach and inductive reasoning to explore the possible impacts of migration integration policies as social determinants of health among this group. Data was collected through 31 semi-structured interviewees with highly educated immigrants who had an…

The spatial heterogeneity and dynamics of tourism-flow spillover effect: The role of high-speed train in China
The existing literature has not fully explored the spatial heterogeneity and dynamics of spillover effects of tourism-flow patterns, and this article makes contributions to addressing this issue. Using spatial autoregressive models and comparing the results for the non-high-speed train (HST) era (2002–2006) and those for the HST era (2011–2015) of China, this article finds that in the HST era, the spillover effect of tourism flows from neighborin…
The potential of metabolic fingerprinting as a tool for the modernisation of TCM preparations
A vast majority Chinese herbal medicines (CHM) are traditionally administered as individually prepared water decoctions (tang) which are rather complicated in practice and their dry extracts show technological problems that hamper straight production of more convenient application forms. Modernised extraction procedures may overcome these difficulties but there is lack of clinical evidence supporting their therapeutic equivalence to traditional d…
Good practice in reviewing and publishing studies on herbal medicine, with special emphasis on traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese materia medica
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Studies on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), like those of other systems of traditional medicine (TM), are very variable in their quality, content and focus, resulting in issues around their acceptability to the global scientific community. In an attempt to address these issues, an European Union funded FP7 consortium, composed of both Chinese and European scientists and named "Good practice in traditional Chines…

A Personality-Based Model of Adolescent Violence
The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between adolescent violence and two personality constructs: self-esteem and lack of self-concern. Other types of delinquent behaviour such as use of alcohol and illicit drugs were also examined. It was hypothesized that adolescents who fought would have lower self-esteem and higher measures of a lack of self-concern than those who did not fight. It was also hypothesized that adolescent fighter…

Adolescent gambling and drug use
In this study, 4516 adolescents (aged 11–16 years) completed a questionnaire examining the relationship between underage National Lottery gambling, underage scratchcard gambling, cigarette smoking, drinking alcohol and drug use. It was found that these behaviours were closely linked. Adolescent gamblers reported that they were significantly more likely to drink alcohol (particularly ‘alcopops’), smoke tobacco and take drugs compared to non-gamble…
The effects of the scheme for BCG vaccination of schoolchildren in England and Wales and the consequences of discontinuing the scheme at various dates
The aims of this paper were to estimate the numbers of tuberculosis notifications in young white adults which will be prevented in the next 25 years by the schools BCG vaccination scheme, and to assess the numbers of additional notifications if the scheme were to be discontinued. Assuming that in the white ethnic group in England and Wales the decline in tuberculosis notification rates (8-10% per year for ages less than 45 years) and efficacy of …
Changes in tuberculosis notification rates in the white ethnic group in England and Wales between 1953 and 1983
Since the early 1960s notification rates for tuberculosis in England and Wales for the whole population have been influenced by high rates in certain ethnic groups. Using data based on country of birth from the British (Thoracic and) Tuberculosis Association surveys of 1965 and 1971, and based on ethnic origin from the Medical Research Council surveys in 1978/79 and 1983, rates for the white ethnic group have been estimated at those four times, a…

Smallpox Inoculation: An Eighteenth-Century Mathematical Controversy
Mortality amongst Babies from Injury at Birth
Much has been said and written about infant mortality and particularly about its decline. Even statesmen have cited its decrease as suggestive evidence of the benefits which arise from their stewardship. They are, it would seem, oblivious of the fact that the decline is not of recent occurrence but one which has been operating over a period of many years. The facts are easy to appreciate. Fifty years ago the mortality in infancy in England and Wa…
