S teven T rout . The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Angel Fire
On May 22, 1971, the third anniversary of First Lieutenant David Westphall’s death in Vietnam, his bereaved family dedicated a monument to his memory. The peaceful rural location was near the town of Angel Fire, in the Sangre de Cristo mountains in northern New Mexico. Amid wildflowers and pine trees, a biomorphic white stucco-clad shape resembling a pair of wings soared skyward. David’s father, Victor Westphall, was a building contractor. The me…
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Politics of Post-Racialism
This article examines the history of the design of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, dedicated in October 2011. Based on documentary records and original interviews, it uncovers new evidence about the design competition, the design’s oversight by federal commissions and the selection of the inscriptions. The article highlights the consequences of the sponsors’ preference for “universal” and “timeless” themes over King’s radical criti…

The American War in Viet Nam
Susan Lyn Eastman writes of poetry, prose, and narrative films about, and memorials to, the Vietnam War, focusing on works produced since 1990. In chapter 1 of The American War in Viet Nam she revisits the creation of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Subsequent chapters address poetic responses to that memorial; the Vietnam Women's Memorial, dedicated in 1993; the perspectives of civilian women married to Vietnam War veterans; na…

Memorial Mania
This prodigiously researched, generously illustrated book will interest those involved in commemoration studies or the “cultural politics of emotion.” Erika Doss considers memorials “archives of public affect” and “repositories of feelings and emotions” (p. 13). Concentrating largely on U.S. examples, she sees much of today's memorial making as “excessive, frenzied, and extreme—hence manic” (ibid.). This “mania” is especially shaped by “the fever…
Making Sense of the Vietnam Wars
This volume gathers together a group of distinguished scholars to bring fresh perspectives to the question, “Why Vietnam?” Their contributions address the factors that led the United States to intervene militarily in Vietnam and the reasons (other than military strategy and feats of arms) that the conflict developed and concluded as it did; they also demonstrate the liveliness of current historiographical debates. The emergence of new interpretat…
The “Frustrated Hawks,” Tet 1968, and the Transformation of American Politics
1. The Rise of Conservatism and the “Frustrated Hawks”Although the 1960s are generally remembered as a decade of leftist protest and demands for radical change, and the year 1968 as a time of rebellion in the streets, this period has also begun to be recognized as a key moment in the emergence of the modern conservative movement, which Bruce and Laurie see as the “central story of American politics since World War II.” Historians of conservatism …
