Sentiments of a British-American Woman
Owen S. Ireland's latest work rescues Esther DeBerdt Reed (1746–1780), “one of the foremost political female founders,” from historical obscurity (p. 3). The format of the book closely follows the extant letters of Esther DeBerdt Reed and her husband Joseph Reed (1741–1785). The resulting biography stands as a prime example of a sympathetic treatment of a truly British American woman. The early chapters focus on the couple's whirlwind romance. Ir…
A Work of Friendship”
This article investigates the friendship of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Franklin Pierce over the period 1852–1868. By revealing an intimate, later-life friendship between the two men, it underscores the role of enmity toward others in shaping the friendships of political actors in the Civil War era. It examines the development of this friendship through three different phases of their lives. First, the period of partisan activity in the presidential …
Modern Manhood and the Boy Scouts of America
In this contribution to the history of manhood in the early twentieth century, Benjamin René Jordan has positioned the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) as an ideal site of exploration for gender historians. Jordan cleverly stages a recurring tension among BSA officials: whether to embrace an aggressive masculinity (typified by the so-called axemen of the organization) or a more corporate orientation (the “typewriter men”). Examining organizational rec…

Ryan broadly defines patriarchy to include ‘the authority of men in households, government, economics, sexuality, and religion, and culture’, which permits her to conduct an ‘intersectional analysis’ that uncovers ‘the ways patriarchal practices ordered women, men, poor whites, African American, and Indians as…
