  • The Centrality of Military Ties in the Philippine-U.S. Relationship

    Open Access•Kenton Clymer•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•2022

Bound by War surveys the Philippine-U.S. relationship from U.S. acquisition in 1899 to the return of the Balangiga Bells (war booty from the Philippine-American War that followed annexation) in December 2018. Capozzola argues that the military connections were the relationship’s most important aspect: “War shaped every aspect of the Pacific Century, from how Americans and Filipinos thought about each other to how they lived together” (7). This th…

  • Southeast Asia

    Open Access•Kenton Clymer•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•2021

When I was an undergraduate history major in college, I learned much from the inspired teaching of the great Grinnell College historian Joseph F. Wall. One of the books assigned was E. H. Carr’s, What is History? Later in graduate school, one of my best professors told me it was a dangerous book. But I discovered a great deal from Wall and from the book, including the astounding claim that the history was not the same as “the past,” and, even mor…

  • Taste of Control

    Open Access•Kenton Clymer•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2021•Cited by: 2

For decades, American historical scholarship about Philippine-American relations was limited. But when the Vietnam War focused attention on U.S. relations with Southeast Asia, new, archivally based research began. Among the first to appear was Theodore W. Friend's Bancroft-prize-winning book, Between Two Empires: The Ordeal of the Philippines, 1929–1946 (1965). Next Bonifacio S. Salamanca, Peter W. Stanley, and Glenn A. May explored the first twe…

A Great Place to Have a War: America in Laos and the Birth of the Military CIA. By Joshua Kurlantzick. New York: Simon and Schuster, 2017. Hardcover: 323pp. This aptly, but ironically, titled book tells the story of US involvement in Laos from the early 1950s through the secret war of the 1960s and beyond. Like many journalistic accounts, the book relies substantially on interviews with the American participants and the Hmong military leader Vang…

Unsettled: Cambodian Refugees in the New York City Hyperghetto tells the story of Cambodian refugees who were settled in the Bronx after the murderous Khmer Rouge Regime collapsed following the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in December 1978. This participant history (author Eric Tang was a community organizer in New York) focuses primarily on the family of Ra Pronh. She survived the Khmer Rouge years (1975–1978), was taken captive by the retrea…

  • The United States and the Guomindang (Kmt) Forces in Burma, 1949–1954

    Kenton Clymer•ARTICLE•The Chinese Historical Review•2014

As Mao Zedong’s armies swept to victory in 1949, thousands of Guomindang (KMT) troops fled into northern Burma. The newly independent country they entered was near collapse. Burma had not recovered from the devastation of World War II and also faced two communist rebellions and several insurgencies in ethnic minority areas. The KMT troops complicated Burma?s relations with the new People?s Republic of China (PRC), fed traditional suspicions of th…

  • The United States and Cambodia, 1969-2000

Kenton Clymer, Kenton J Clymer•BOOK•United States and Cambodia,…•2013

Beginning with the restoration of diplomatic relations between the US and Cambodia in 1969, this book is the first to systematically explore the controversial issues and events surrounding the relationship between the two countries in the latter half of the 20th century. It traces how the secret bombing of Cambodia, the coup which overthrew Prince Sihanouk and the American invasion of Cambodia in 1970 led to a brutal civil war. Based on extensive…

  • The Ground Observer Corps

    Kenton Clymer•ARTICLE•Journal of Cold War Studies•2013•References: 1

This essay examines the development and demise of one of the least studied elements of U.S. homeland defense efforts in the 1950s: the Ground Observer Corps (GOC). The article recounts the history of the GOC from its founding in the mid-1950s until its deactivation in 1959 and concludes that it never came close to achieving its goals for recruitment and effectiveness. Yet, despite the major shortcomings of the GOC, the U.S. Air Force continued to…

  • The Trial for High Treason of the “Burma Surgeon,” Gordon S. Seagrave

    Kenton Clymer•ARTICLE•Pacific Historical Review•2012

This article explores the trial in Burma for high treason in 1950–1951 of a saintly American figure, Gordon Seagrave, who operated a remote mission hospital. Neither Seagrave nor the trial has received adequate scholarly attention. The trial provides a window into the revolutionary conditions then existing in newly independent Burma and into Burmese views of American missionaries who they thought supported the ethnic minorities who were in rebell…

  • Jimmy Carter, Human Rights, and Cambodia

    Kenton Clymer•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•2003

A foreign policy that placed the defense of human rights at its center characterized the administration of Jimmy Carter—at least rhetorically. “As President,” Carter wrote in his memoirs, “I hoped and believed that the expansion of human rights might be the wave of the future throughout the world, and I wanted the United States to be on the crest of this movement.”1 Most popular and scholarly commentators have been critical of Carter as a foreign…

    Kenton Clymer, Kenton J Clymer•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•1999

Early on the morning of 26 April 1965, a flash telegram arrived at the State Department from the American embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Several hundred demonstrators were converging on the embassy, the crowd was growing steadily, and “rocks have begun to fly.” All local employees were sent home, embassy automobiles removed from the vicinity, and American dependents sent to the Hotel Royal. In another hour most of the windows had been broken an…

Although the United States had extensive commercial contacts with the Spanish-owned Philippine Islands early in the nineteenth century, interest in them declined sharply by the 1890s. But with the Spanish-American War of 1898 and Commodore George Dewey's defeat of the Spanish fleet at Manila the Philippines reappeared on the American horizon. At the peace negotiations the United States demanded, and received, the islands

This tension became especially acute during World War II when the status of India emerged as a major issue.1 To American diplomats assigned to India during this period, the conflict forced the deepest refl…
