M agda T eter . Blood Libel: On the Trail of an Antisemitic Myth
Scholars of antisemitism today talk about antisemitic attitudes and ideas less as ideology and more as a reservoir of narratives and myths that people reach for at particular moments to understand a problem. Banning Jewish “Extremist” Literature in Russia: Conversion and Toleration in Historical Perspective
In 2017, Russia’s Ministry of Justice banned a nineteenth-century book written by the German rabbi Markus Lehmann, labeling it extremist literature. This article places current Russian efforts to stamp out religious extremism in a broader historical context of imperial productions of tolerance and intolerance and the impact on religious minorities. It examines the case of Jews in the Russian Empire and post-Soviet Russia through the lens of relig…

This essay uses the case of a childless widow and her apostate brother-in-law to examine how gender and conversion became lightning rods for Jewish legalists and publicists like Moshe Leib Lilienblum to espouse religious and social reforms in late-imperial Russia. A microanalysis of Sura Gener's sensational levirate divorce case and the multiple legal regimes involved in adjudicating her fate sheds light on the history of Jewish modernization in …
Adam Teller. Money, Power, and Influence in Eighteenth-Century Lithuania: The Jews on the Radziwiłł Estates
Adam Teller’s study—newly revised, and translated from Hebrew into English—of Jewish economic life in the early modern Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is empirically rich, methodically organized, and complements the growing subfield of Jewish economic history. With Money, Power, and Influence in Eighteenth-Century Lithuania, Teller joins a wave of scholars who have started to ask once-uncomfortable questions about relative Jewish successes under c…
