  • The Coolie’s Great War

    Open Access•Hilary Buxton•ARTICLE•Journal of Social History•2023

In 1915, Sukha Kalloo was buried in the local churchyard in Brockenhurst, England, near the Lady Hardinge Hospital. A hospital sweeper from Bareilly who died during his war service, Kalloo was an “untouchable” whose stigmatized status led to his burial amongst several New Zealand gravesites—alongside an epitaph celebrating his “sacrifice” for “King & Empire.” Pieced together from official correspondence, fictional narrative, and a very real heads…

  • Measuring Difference, Numbering Normal

    Open Access•Hilary Buxton•ARTICLE•Twentieth Century British History•2021

What constituted a normal body in interwar Britain? Widely explored by scholars of eugenics, war, sexuality, and physical culture, McGuire skilfully turns this question to confront the figures and calculations used to define ‘normal’ and its inverse during this period. Measuring Difference seeks to make visible the biased data and devices that shaped the quantification and experience of ‘invisible disability’ in interwar Britain. McGuire does so …

Background: Infections acquired during labour and delivery are a significant cause of maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Adherence to hand hygiene protocols is a critical component of infection prevention strategies, but few studies have closely examined the hand hygiene of health care providers with sufficient detail to understand infection risks and prioritize prevention strategies. Methods: This observational study was conducted in si…

    Open Access•Hilary Buxton•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2018•References: 28

In 1878, amid a rapidly proliferating social interest in public health and cleanliness, a group of sanitary scientists and reformers founded the Parkes Museum of Hygiene in central London. Dirt and contagion knew no social boundaries, and the Parkes's founders conceived of the museum as a dynamic space for all classes to better themselves and their environments. They promoted sanitary science through a variety of initiatives: exhibits of scientif…

  • Imperial Amnesia

    Open Access•Hilary Buxton•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2018

World War I was a watershed both for military psychiatry and British imperial mobilization. This article investigates how clinicians, psychiatrists, and British and Indian officials responded to the psychological crises of their South Asian servicemen, of whom over 1.4 million served between 1914 and 1918. It argues that mental health treatment in the Great War served as an experimental site where officers and soldiers contested ideas about race,…
