    Open Access•Patrice Whitehorne-Smith, Kunal Lalwani et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2026

Globally, people with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) experience significant challenges with healthcare access. The Jamaican public mental health service has undertaken several transformations to increase the accessibility of mental health services and improve outcomes for people with mental illnesses. Des…

  • Prevalence and correlates of severe problematic cannabis use

Open Access•Kunal Lalwani, Winston De La Haye et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

One out of every two Jamaicans who used cannabis in the past year reported severe PCU and smoked an average of two cannabis joints per day. Early initiation increases the risk of severe PCU. Accordingly, a public health approach involving multiple sectors is needed to provide treatment options

    Open Access•Carlotta M Arthur, Frederick W Hickling et al.•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2010•Cited by: 7•References: 36

Stigma may be an important factor in mental health service seeking and utilization. However, little work on stigma has been conducted in developing nations in the Caribbean, including Jamaica. We explored mental illness stigma in Jamaica by conducting focus groups with 16 community samples. Four overarching conceptual themes are discussed: (1) community members' definitions of stigma; (2) emotional responses towards those with mental illness, suc…

  • Internalizing stigma associated with mental illness

Open Access•Roger C Gibson, Wendel Abel et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2008

The small number of mentally ill respondents resulted in low statistical power for demonstrating differences between that subgroup and other respondents. The significantly more positive attitudes and behavior of respondents with family members with mental illness suggest that some benefit may be gained by creating more opportunities for the general public to interact with persons with mental illness
