Climate change and gender inequality
The link between climate change and gender is intricate, particularly in developing countries, where women are disproportionately affected due to lower adaptive capacity and economic opportunities. This study investigates the gendered economic impacts of climate change in South Africa using a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium model. Results reveal that climate-induced shocks reduce productivity, labour demand and economic growth, l…

Climate Change Impacts on Women’s Migration and Poverty in Burkina Faso
What are the impacts of climate change and the Ukrainian war on the sustainable development goals? A case study for Burkina Faso
Repeated shocks to fragile economies call into question the feasibility of the achievement of the sustainable development goals. This study uses a gender‐dynamic computable general equilibrium model linked to a micro model to assess the impacts of the war in Ukraine and climate shocks on SDG1, SDG2, SDG5 and SDG8 for Burkina Faso's economy. The results reveal negative impacts on economic growth with an increase in food insecurity and household po…
Assessing the impacts of climate change on women's poverty
Climate change affects men and women differently, and pre‐existing gender disparities may worsen. We use a gendered computable general equilibrium model linked with microsimulations to assess the distributive effects of climate change in Bolivia. Two scenarios are evaluated. The first scenario addresses capital and land damages, while the second analyses the decrease in agricultural production yields. We find that both scenarios have negative imp…
Co-Modelling for Relief and Recovery from the Covid-19 Crisis in Zimbabwe
This article presents lessons on transcendence, from research on the socioeconomic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic to policy, using experiences from Zimbabwe. The case study parallels literature on knowledge translation that suggests that the challenge of evidence-informed policy is more a problem of evidence production than evidence translation. The positioning, influence, and leverage of the research team was predominantly built on a platform …
The impact of the Covid-19 enforced lockdown and fiscal package on the South African economy and environment
This paper offers a quantitative assessment of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdown and government fiscal plan, containing ‘green’ elements on the economy and the environment of South Africa. The analysis uses a dynamic computable general equilibrium model operationalised using a social accounting matrix coupled with a greenhouse gas balance and emissions data. We find that while the economy is harshly impacted by the pandemic in…
Gender and Covid‐19
The coronavirus pandemic (COVID‐19) is threatening the well‐being of citizens in most countries of the world; however, women and men could be affected in different ways. This study uses a gender‐sensitive computable general equilibrium model linked to a micro model to assess the impacts of COVID‐19 in Bolivia. The results reveal negative effects for all economic agents. Female‐headed households in general and those headed by unskilled women in pa…
Economic impacts of Covid-19 on the tourism sector in Tanzania
The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has affected the tourism sector by closing borders, reducing both the transportation of tourists and tourist demand. Developing countries, such as Tanzania, where the tourism sector contributes a high share to gross domestic product, are facing considerable economic consequences. Tourism interlinks domestic sectors such as transport, accommodation, beverages and food, and retail trade and thus plays an important ro…
The implications of deteriorating state‐owned enterprise performance on the South African economy
This paper constructs and uses a recursive dynamic general equilibrium model for South Africa to examine the economywide consequences of a continued deterioration in performance of state‐owned enterprises and rise in foreign interest rates. A decline in state‐owned enterprisesproductivity has substantial negative ramifications on the rest of the economy. Government would increase its domestic borrowing and therefore hamper private investment, lea…
How Covid-19 Pandemic Worsens the Economic Situation of Women in South Africa

Does South African Affirmative Action Policy Reduce Poverty? A CGE Analysis
This article presents a computable general equilibrium model (CGEM) able to measure the impacts of the affirmative action policy set up in South Africa. In order to decrease inequalities inherited from the former regime, the government encourages firms to employ historically disadvantaged persons. Through this study, we evaluate the impact of this policy on employment, poverty, and inequality using a CGE top‐down approach. The article analyzes on…
A Retrospective Look at How Well a Macro‐Micro Model Can Analyze the Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on a Developing Country
This article is a follow‐up to one that looked at the impact of the economic crisis on child poverty in South Africa using a macro–micro modeling technique. The current article's contribution is to position the results of the first article in the context of the actual effects of the crisis. Hence, this article offers a comparative analysis between the results of the modeling with the actual observed outcomes. It also offers explanations for why s…
The Impact of the International Economic Crisis on Child Poverty in South Africa
This article provides insights into the magnitude of the shocks associated with the recent global economic crisis in South Africa, and the extent of fragility in terms of poverty levels and, particularly, child well-being. The analysis combines macro-economic and micro-economic tools and shows that the impact of the economic crisis was not severe on children's poverty headcount, but that material welfare declined across large parts of the distrib…
