  • Methodologies in Critical Terrorism Studies

Alice E Finden, Carlos Yebra López et al.•BOOK•Methodologies in Critical…•2023

This interdisciplinary book presents an intervention into methodological practices in the subfield of Critical Terrorism Studies, and features established and early career scholars. The volume interrogates the role that research methods play in shaping the sub-discipline of Critical Terrorism Studies (CTS). It responds to two major methodological gaps within CTS: (1) the dearth of Global South cases and voices, and decolonial and feminist approac…

  • Specters of Judeo-Spanish

    Open Access•Carlos Yebra López•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Languages•2023

The aim of this essay is to problematize the ontology of Judeo-Spanish qua language. First, I argue that its traditional conceptualization as an autonomous, self-contained language is predicated on a (flawed) classical ontological framework that relies on so-called ‘named languages theory.’ Second, I contend that a more enlightened understanding of Judeo-Spanish as a linguistic phenomenon necessitates a paradigm shift toward a hauntological frame…

  • Decolonizing Spanish

    Open Access•Carlos Yebra López•ARTICLE•TRANSMODERNITY Journal of…•2022•References: 10

The current institutional attempts by the Cervantes Institute of Manila and the Spanish Royal Academy of Tel Aviv to revitalize Chavacano and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), respectively, by assimilating them into Spanish pose a fundamental paradox: how can the official institutions of the Spanish language document, map, and characterize the subalternized speaking communities of the “Global Hispanophone” (Calderwood) while resisting the temptation to imp…

  • Terrorism”, “democracy” and the Spanish 1978 “constitution”

    Carlos Yebra López•ARTICLE•Critical Studies on Terrorism•2022•References: 3

In this article, I argue that during the Spanish Transition (1975–1982) there was a gradual semantic displacement that would strongly condition subsequent usages of the terms “terrorism”, “democracy” and “Constitution” in mass public discourse as supposedly designating self-evident realities, rather than ontologically unstable and socially constructed entities. While the meaning of these three signifiers had been hotly debated as part of the tran…

  • The Digital (De)territorialization of Ladino in the Twenty-First Century

    Carlos Yebra López•ARTICLE•WORD•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 24

Since the nineteenth century, the global diasporic community of Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) speakers has enjoyed a number of opportunities to reclaim a territory for itself (Spain, Portugal, Israel). Devoid of a specific geographical home, in the twenty-first century this community has resorted to the creation of Sephardi online communities, also conceptualized as "Digital Home-Lands" following Held (2010).Drawing upon Deleuze and Guattari's concept o…
