Serbia between East and West
This article critically examines contemporary narratives which frame Serbian politics as a conflict between supporters of a pro-European Union (EU) policy and supporters of closer ties with Russia. Contrary to this narrative, contemporary Serbian political actors increasingly present policies and platforms oriented towards both the European Union and Russia. These developments reflect the contradictory legacies arising from the history of Serbian…

The Serbian Radical Party in the 2004 Local Elections
This study examines the factors that contributed to the success of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) during Serbia's September 2004 local elections. Understanding the factors behind the SRS's success is important, both for the future of local government in an increasingly decentralized Serbia, and for electoral politics at the national level. Through quantitative analyses of election results across 160 localities and drawing from evidence gathered …
Prospects for Managed Democracy in Russia
The 2003 Duma election resulted in the victory of the party of power, thereby strengthening managed democracy in Russia. Since then, political trends in Russia's regions and rural politics provide considerable evidence of the increasing ability of pro-Kremlin forces to maximise their electoral fortunes in national contests. These political trends make it likely that United Russia will not only emerge as the dominant party in the 2007 Duma electio…
Federalism and Political Recentralization in the Russian Federation: United Russia As the Party of Power
This article analyzes trends in Russian federalism by examining the rise of United Russia as a party of power. For the first time in post-Soviet history, a pro-presidential party of power has been successfully established, both reflecting and facilitating political recentralization. This article traces United Russia's role in this recentralization process and examines the factors that have allowed United Russia to succeed as the central governmen…
