Vietfuckin’- nam !”
Within dominant Orientalist frameworks, Vietnam continues to circulate in Western cultural imaginaries largely through cinematic representations of the Vietnam War. These films have long reinforced frontier myths and racialized narratives of conflict, yet scholarly attention has focused primarily on war, trauma, and geopolitics, leaving underexplored the ways such representations shape sexualized imaginaries of Vietnam as a tourist destination. T…
Modern day Kolkata and mimicry of England
This paper explores the phenomenon of colonial nostalgia among middle-class and lower-middle-class residents in Kolkata and its surrounding suburbs – groups often overlooked in dominant discussions of postcolonial memory and urban identity. While nostalgia for the British Raj is typically associated with elites or nationalist critique, this study reveals how individuals with limited access to Anglophone cultural capital also express a complex lon…

The Shifting Contours of Nostalgia, Homelessness, and Homecoming
At the end of the Vietnam War, after the U.S. veterans returned to their homeland, they were rejected by their own society and hence experienced an inner state of homelessness. Having faced everyday humiliation and monotonous life in their homeland, they longed for Vietnam where they were once important and desired to return there as tourists now. In this journey of life, they turned out to be existential characters who embody the predicament of …
The Unfortunate Inner Lives of Scholars of Color in Leisure and Tourism Studies
A wholly racialized world’
This paper is a critical autoethnographic exploration of the racial inequalities in leisure and tourism studies by taking the case of the peer review process and the place of scholars of colour within it. Precisely, I challenge the White logic in the peer review process in leisure and tourism studies. While furthering recent scholars’ efforts in attempting to challenge positivist epistemologies on mainstream leisure and tourism studies, I ask per…

A Phenomenological Analysis of Tourist Identity
There is a dearth of narrative research related to "tourist identity" in leisure and tourism studies. In this review paper, we identify this research gap upon performing a systematic review of articles in leisure and tourism studies published on the SCOPUS database in the last four decades (1979-2021). We furnish three theses based on the prevalent research gap and offer three propositions that foreground the questions of identity. We argue that …
‘Resistant hybridity’
This study investigated the image of the Naga Indigenous people in mainland India and how the Nagas endeavour to develop an alternative image. Findings revealed that the mainland Indians’ image of the Nagas is that of ‘noble savage’ which is similar to the Indian Government’s representation of the Nagas as exotic and untamed. The Nagas expressed cultural resistance and articulated radical Naga discourse through their religion (Christianity) to en…
Child Labor, Human Rights and Social Justice in Viet Nam
On the playgrounds of America, every kid's goal is to score. In Asia, where children stitch soccer balls for six cents an hour, the goal is to survive. (Sydney Schanberg, 1996, Life Magazine). In th

"Yearning for the British Raj"
This case study of Raj tourism is based on a postcolonial discourse of nostalgia that applies the language of tourism to the "Old Talk" of Empire when Britain once ruled the waves. Various facets of Raj tourism are semiotically explored in relation to the correspondence between motivation and promotion in order to more fully appreciate the process of understanding tourism itself. Typical areas of cultural communication that are inductively analyz…

The white woman's burden' - the racialized, gendered politics of volunteer tourism
Talking about race in volunteer tourism is like breaking a taboo. By critically exploring the racialized and gendered politics of volunteer tourism from the perspective of the 'white savior complex,' we seek to open new avenues of discussion to break this silence. We employ a postcolonial feminist theoretical framework to analyze volunteer tourism. The meanings, practices, and policies of volunteer tourism development are informed by the racializ…
Situating the tourist gaze
For decades, scholars have emphasized the power of the Western tourist gaze to construct Third World destinations as the ‘Exotic Other'. Scholars have also shown that ‘Third World’ tourism fuelled by media fantasies of the Other represents neo-colonization in the twenty-first century. However, considering all its intentions/claims of impartiality, tourism research has generally travelled in only one direction (from the West to the East). In this …

A Photo Ethnography of Tourism as Neo-Colonialism
Where fantasy becomes reality
This paper examines the political economy of tourism representations and destination imaging in Brazil and its effect on tourism impacts in the country. The central argument is that the way Brazil and its women are represented in tourist images has an important effect on how they are consumed. By investigating the representation of Brazil and its women during colonial times by Europeans, by the Brazilian Government and by the contemporary Western…
"To be Japanese for a Day"
Tourism scholars have studied the phenomenon of senior travelers' decision-making behavior. However, few studies have paid attention to the role of colonial nostalgia in senior travelers' decision-making behavior. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the importance of colonial nostalgia in senior travelers' decision-making behavior in hot springs tourism in Taiwan. The findings revealed that colonial nostalgia is indeed one of the major…
Nostalgia, Identity and Tourism
In today's global world of movement our personal identities are changing. So, ‘where is my “home”?’ and ‘what is my “identity”?’ have become essential questions in one's life. In recent times, more and more diasporic communities visit their homelands, perhaps to reroot their identities. This study explored the influence of Bollywood movies in the Indian diaspora's identity construction and notions of home and tourism behaviour to India. Findings …
