Whitestone’—A Specific Polished Stone Tool Raw Material in the Late Neolithic of Southern Hungary
‘Whitestone’ is a characteristic raw material in the Late Neolithic (Tisza and Lengyel culture) polished stone tool (chisel, adze, macehead) archaeological record in Southern Hungary. However, the lithology—the technical term not reflecting a petrographic definition—needs detailed petrographic-analytical investigations (by optical microscopy, PGAA, and SEM-EDS) to determine the exact rock types and to connect them to specific geological sources. …
Preliminary investigations on the chipped stone industry of the Copper Age settlement of Malnaş Băi (Málnásfürdő)-Füvenyestető (Covasna County, Romania)
The chipped stone collection unearthed during the 2014-2016 archaeological excavations from the Copper Age settlement at Malnaş Băi was analysed from a multidisciplinary perspective. The aims were to differentiate between the processing technologies of the local rocks and of the long-distance raw materials and to assess the technological traditions that characterise their production. The elemental composition of a selected sample set of the artef…
Provenance analysis of red sandstone ground stone tools from the tell site of Hódmezővásárhely-Gorzsa (SE Hungary)
Hódmezővásárhely-Gorzsa is a multi-period tell settlement in South Hungary in the centre of the Great Hungarian Plain, about 15 km southwest of the city of Hódmezővásárhely. The thickest section of the settlement belongs to the Late Neolithic Tisza Culture period. In total, 1061 macrolithic artefacts were unearthed, a quarter of which was polished, and three quarter of which were ground stone tools. Half of the ground stones were made of differen…
Production technology and knowledge transfer of calcite‐tempered grey ware bowls from 2nd‐ to 5th‐century ce Noricum (Austria)
Aspects of 2nd‐ to 5th‐century ce Roman production technology and knowledge transfer in southern Austria (known as Noricum ) were examined. With no evidence for workshops identified in the study area, 44 grey ware bowls from two sites at Aguntum and Lavant were studied macroscopically, and combined with optical microscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction, prompt gamma activation, neutron activation and scanning electron microscopy, in order to understan…
Chemical analyses on late antique glass finds from Histria, Romania
This paper reports the chemical composition of 36 glass finds from Histria, Romania, mainly dated to the Late Antique period (4th–6th c. AD) obtained by Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) at the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC). Histria glass fragments were identified as Série 2.1, Série 3.2, and Série 3.3 of Foy, HIMT, Roman, and Sb decolorized. Most of the analyzed objects were manufactured from glass originating in Egyptian primary workshops…
Integrated petrographic and geochemical analysis of the Langobard age pottery of Szólád, Western Hungary
This study presents the results of the petrographic and geochemical analyses of the entire pottery assemblage discovered at the sixth-century (AD) cemetery of Szólád, Western Hungary, associated with the Langobard era in the territory of the former Roman province of Pannonia. Szólád is one of the most prominent archaeological sites of this period, where prior studies have shown that the cemetery was used for ca. one or two generations by a migrat…
The first greenstone axe in Hungary

A Cserhát-Cserhátalja-Gödöllői-dombság-Mátraalja vidékéről származó balták részletes vizsgálata roncsolásmentes (makroszkópos kőzettani megfigyelés, mágneses szuszceptibilitás mérés, PGAA, eredeti felszínen végzett SEM-EDS) és alárendelten roncsolásos (OM, SEMEDS) vizsgálatával meghatároztuk a…

Archaeometrical results related to Neolithic amphibolite stone implements from Northeast Hungary
A multi-analytical study of Bronze Age pottery from the Unesco site of Al-Khutm (Bat, Oman)
An Archaeometallurgical Investigation on Metal Samples from the Chiaravalle Cross
The production and manufacturing techniques of metals involve expertise, and the study of ancient artifacts relies on interdisciplinary skills. Metalworking processes used in the production of jewelry masterpieces can, for example, give indications on the provenance of an ancient object of an unknown origin and the techniques used. In this regard, metallic samples from the Chiaravalle Cross (a beautiful processional cross with a complex structure…

Non-destructive analysis of bronze objects from Füzesabony-Öregdomb
Chemical composition of bronze findings from the Füzesabony-Öregdomb hoard and gold stray finds from Füzesabony were determined using non-destructive methods. The main components of the bronze objects are copper and tin, with small amount of nickel and lead. The latter objects are made predominantly of gold with 16–23 weight percent silver
A comparative study of PGAA and portable XRF used for non-destructive provenancing archaeological obsidian
Application of prompt gamma activation analysis to provenance study of the Korean obsidian artefacts
Investigating beads from Chalcolithic funerary cremation contexts of Perdigões, Portugal
X-ray and neutron-based non-invasive analysis of prehistoric stone artefacts
