  • Mapping Perceptions Diachronically: A Restudy of Mental Maps in Michigan

    Gabriela G Alfaraz, Dennis R Preston•ARTICLE•American Speech•2024•References: 31

This research takes a diachronic approach to perceptual dialectology and uses data collected in 2016–17 to replicate work done in Michigan in 1985–87 by Dennis Preston to examine possible changes in perceptions. The frequency of identification of regions and their spatial distributions were analyzed in 148 newly collected hand-drawn maps. The rates of regional identification in these are generally similar to the earlier ones, with the exception o…

  • Ethnicity and Perceptual Dialectology

    Gabriela G Alfaraz, Alexander Mason•ARTICLE•American Speech•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 28

Ethnicity of respondents has not been considered in the cognitive mapping of regional dialects, even though it has been shown to influence spatial perception in other social science fields. In this article, the authors draw on the findings of a cognitive mapping study, based on similar studies by Dennis Preston, that compared the behavior of two ethnolinguistic groups to examine whether linguistic and cultural experiences affect awareness of the …

  • Framing the diaspora and the homeland: Language ideologies in the Cuban diaspora

    Open Access•Gabriela G Alfaraz•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 18

This article discusses language ideologies in relation to political ideologies in the Cuban diaspora in the United States. The findings of three longitudinal attitude studies, two conducted using the methods of perceptual dialectology, and a third with the matched-guise method, indicated that the diaspora's political beliefs have a robust effect on its beliefs about Cuban Spanish in the diaspora and in the homeland. The perceptions studies showed…

  • The Status of the Extension of estar in Cuban Spanish

    Gabriela G Alfaraz•ARTICLE•Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone…•2012

This paper presents variationist sociolinguistics research on the copula estar with predicate adjectives in Cuban Spanish, a variety in which it appears to have gone largely uninvestigated. To examine its social and linguistic distribution, a real-time study with data from the 1960s and 1990s was coupled with an apparent-time study with data from the 1990s. Findings showed that generation and adjective type were significant factors constraining t…

  • Cuban Spanish in the US context: Linguistic and social constraints on the variation of syllable-final (r) among Cuban newcomers

    Gabriela G Alfaraz•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2012

Immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries bring their varieties of Spanish to the US and contribute to the ongoing development of those varieties in the new setting. In this paper, the variation of syllable final (r) is investigated in a group of Cuban immigrants in Miami. It reports on the linguistic and social factors that constrain variation of four variants (retention, assimilation, lateralization, and aspiration), particularly their generat…

  • Accusative object marking: A change in progress in Cuban Spanish

    Gabriela G Alfaraz•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2011

Although accusative object marking has been widely studied in Spanish, there do not appear to be sociolinguistic studies addressing its variation and possible change, despite evidence of loss of the marker from Dominican Spanish. This paper describes the findings of a study on the marking of human accusative objects in Cuban Spanish that compared two time periods and two generational cohorts with spoken data from the 1960s and 1990s. A significan…

  • Language alternation and choice in a formal register: Spanish and English in bilingual Catholic services

    Open Access•Gabriela G Alfaraz•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

Language alternation tends to be proscribed in formal speech situations and registers; in bilingual communities, however, the use of two languages may be observed in formal speech events and registers. This article investigates the use of Spanish and English in a formal speech event, the religious ceremony performed in the Catholic mass, which is governed by prescribed rules of linguistic conduct, in order to examine the factors that constrain la…

  • Conversing through overlaps: Information status and simultaneous talk in Cuban Spanish

    Gabriela G Alfaraz•ARTICLE•Multilingua•2009•References: 6

Simultaneous speech and turn-taking patterns vary considerably across cultures. Research on varieties of Spanish has confirmed that frequent, lengthy overlaps within and between turns are common. In this paper it is suggested that when speakers engage in simultaneous talk, they observe Grice's Cooperative Principle by adjusting their utterances so that the informativeness of their contribution is minimized in overlap. This paper approaches the li…
