  • Interparental conflict and relationship expectations

Open Access•Amber L Garcia, Wind Goodfriend et al.•ARTICLE•Interpersona An International…•2025

In a sample (n = 226) of emerging adults, the current study found that interparental conflict was associated with decreased expectations for adult romantic relationships. In separate analyses, this relationship was mediated by attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, resilience, and relationship self-efficacy. The results are consistent with previous research showing the harmful effects of high IPC on emerging adults’ relationship processes (Rig…

Para desenvolver essa discussão, adota-se uma abordagem metodológica de natureza hermenêutica e bibliográfica, baseada na análise comparativa de referenciais teóricos relacionados ao tema. • Identity Development and Self-Esteem in Transgender Men

    Wind Goodfriend, Amber L Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 61

Because transgender people often suffer from concerns such as increased depression and anxiety, promoting positive and healthy mental well-being within this community is valuable. Two aspects of well-being that may be particularly relevant to the trans community are identity development and self-esteem. We hypothesized that a better overall transition experience (access to medical and psychological care, support from friends and family, etc.) wou…

  • When It Is Not So Funny

    Open Access•Tay Hack, Amber L Garcia et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2019

This research investigates the phenomenon of “friendly” sexist teases (FSTs), which we define as playful intergroup teases that are based on the negative gender stereotypes that devalue one’s gender group. We first employed a diary study to explore the prevalence of FSTs in college students’ everyday life and found that this type of teasing tends to occur in social situations and often between close others. In a second study, we experimentally ma…

  • Homophobia and the perception of psychological differences

Andrew White, Andrew D White et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology and Sexuality•2018•References: 16

The present research examined the extent to which one’s negative attitudes towards gay individuals influences perceptions of psychological differences between straight and gay groups. Previous research indicates that endorsement of sexist ideologies predicts the exaggeration of psychological differences between men and women. We attempted to replicate these findings in the domain of sexual identity across two studies. Study 1 presented participan…

  • The consequences of perceived discrimination for psychological well-being

    Michael T Schmitt, Nyla R Branscombe et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2014

In 2 meta-analyses, we examined the relationship between perceived discrimination and psychological well-being and tested a number of moderators of that relationship. In Meta-Analysis 1 (328 independent effect sizes, N = 144,246), we examined correlational data measuring both perceived discrimination and psychological well-being (e.g., self-esteem, depression, anxiety, psychological distress, life satisfaction). Using a random-effects model, the …

  • Feeling Threatened About the Future

Open Access•H Robert Outten, Michael T Schmitt et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2012

In many Western countries, the proportion of the population that is White will drop below 50% within the next century. Two experiments examined how anticipation of these future ethnic demographics affects current intergroup processes. In Study 1, White Americans who viewed actual demographic projections for a time when Whites are no longer a numerical majority felt more angry toward and fearful of ethnic minorities than Whites who did not view fu…

  • Attachment Style Differences and Depression in African American and European American College Women

    Open Access•Eileen L Cooley, Amber L Garcia•ARTICLE•Journal of Multicultural…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 32

This study examined ethnic differences in attachment styles and depression among African American and European American college women. African American women reported less favorable views of others, which suggests that attachment styles emphasizing caution in relationships may be normative and adaptive for these women. There were no differences between groups in views of self or reports of depressive symptoms. Implications for long‐term relations…

  • Latinos’ Perceptions of Interethnic Couples

    Open Access•Amber L Garcia, Heidi R Riggio et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 19

Numerous survey findings indicate that the majority of White Americans are accepting of interracial romantic relationships. However, relatively few studies have looked at how different American ethnic minority groups view such relationships. The current research examined Latinos’ evaluations of intraethnic and interethnic couples. Latino participants ( N = 207) read information about either a Latina-Latino, Latina-White, or Latina-Black romantic …

  • The Relative Impact of Anger and Efficacy on Collective Action is Affected by Feelings of Fear

    Open Access•Daniel A Miller, Tracey Cronin et al.•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2009•Cited by: 39•References: 11

Two well-established predictors of collective action are perceptions of group efficacy and feelings of anger. The current research investigates the extent to which the relative impact of these variables differs when fear is or is not also included as a predictor of collective action. The results of two experiments indicate that when fear is not assessed, the importance of anger as a predictor of action is underestimated while the importance of gr…

    Open Access•Amber L Garcia, Daniel A Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 7

The current research investigated participants' reactions to positive and negative comments directed toward them as individuals or as members of a social group. Using both perspective-taking (Studies 1 and 2) and actual interaction methodologies (Study 3), three studies found that participants generally responded negatively to negative comments regardless of the level of identity to which the comment was directed. Positive comments were generally…

  • The Ecological Crisis in Central America

    Open Access•Amber L Garcia, Alberto J García•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2003

Daniel Faber's Environment Under Fire is the product of substantial research and analysis on how the market economy and the imperialist forces of production created the ecological crisis in Central America. Faber's Marxist ecological view underlines the need for new and independent productive forces to stop the destruction of the environment. The book shows how political and economic contradictions have contributed to the exploitation of the peas…
