  • Who texts what to whom and when? Patterning of texting in four multilingual minoritized language communities and a preliminary proposal for the language repertoire matrix

David Eberhard, David M Eberhard et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2022•References: 21

Though computer mediated communication has been widely studied, private messaging in minoritized languages (many without standardized orthographies) is an area of minimal research. This article looks at texting in four multilingual language communities: Maguindanaon (Philippines), Sebuyau (Malaysia), Mamaindê (Brazil) and Marubo (Brazil). The majority of the data comes from the Maguindanao case study, an Austronesian language spoken by over one m…

  • Mamaindê Remixed

    David Eberhard, David M Eberhard•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2021•References: 24

Language change within minority languages is still an underdocumented area of sociolinguistic research. This study addresses that gap by focusing on two speech varieties within Mamaindê, an endangered language of Amazonia. First, the language ecology of Mamaindê is discussed, with attention to the vitality of the traditional language in each of its communities. The structures of the two speech varieties are then described, showing the radical dif…

  • Evidentiality in Nambikwara Languages

David Eberhard, David M Eberhard•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Evidentiality•2018

This chapter describes evidentiality as it is expressed within the Nambikwara language family of west central Brazil, a loosely related affiliation of seventeen language communities living close to the Brazil-Bolivia border. This overview limits its scope to the four varieties where evidentiality has been documented (Mamaindê, Lakondê, Sabanê, and a generic variety of Southern Nambikwara). All four of these languages share several traits that cou…

  • Language Shift and Identity

    Open Access•David Eberhard, David M Eberhard•ARTICLE•Manusya Journal of Humanities•2018

The loss of a minority group’s language may or may not be accompanied by the loss of the same group’s identity. This study explores the factors that appear to condition identity choices among minority communities. A number of language communities in advanced stages of language shift are chosen as case studies. Based on these case studies, a framework is proposed that organizes the factors involved in group identity choices into either language in…

  • Theory and Praxis in Community Based Language Development

    Open Access•David Eberhard, David M Eberhard•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2017

This study will provide a critique of preliminary results obtained from the application of the ‘Guide for Planning the Future of Our Language’ (Hanawalt, Varenkamp, Lahn, & Eberhard 2015) in minority speech communities. This recent methodological tool was developed to enable and empower minoritized language groups to do their own language planning and to control their own language development. The tool is based on a theoretical approach to commun…
